2010-08-27 - I just got my first Aeron and it's great. Except for one thing. I am not impressed with the quality of finish. Lots of untrimmed edges, etc.
Could this be a fake?
Is there any way to make sure it isn't a fake Aeron?

2010-08-02 - Hello, I Love my Aeron chair and would hate to live without it! I would like to know where to get the fabric so I can make a repair on my own. I realize that the tension is critical and placement the utmost importance. I know I could get it right. Where can I get the fabric or mesh?
Thank you for your time and attention!
Love the chair!!!

2010-07-16 - I am wondering if there is any way to fix the height adjustment on my Aeron chair. I bought the chair used and had to replace the cylinder with a new one, which I thought would fix the problem. Turns out something else is broken too, but I don't know what it is and how to fix it. Here is the problem (after replacing the cylinder): When I stand up, the chair goes all the way up, and when I sit, it goes all the way back down. I can use the height adjustment lever to adjust it if I only sit on the very EDGE of my chair, but as soon as I shift more weight towards/past the center point of the chair, the seat falls back down again. (And no, I'm normal weight and using a Size B chair so it's not THAT!) Any ideas?

2010-06-27 - Recently my aeron chair cylinder just fell through the foot stand, and leaned to the side.
When I took it apart, I found that a "nylon washer with ball bearings" in it had failed.
It turns out these things are called thrust bearings.
I found a company that called Quality Bearing Components (qbcbearings.com) that sold
what I needed.
I ordered a thrust bearing (number BTHASY-050) and it did the trick.
I did have to go to the hardware store to get a new "E" clamp. It's the clamp that
attached at the end of the rod, that sticks out the bottom of the cylinder.

2010-06-14 - We have 3 aeron chairs in our office, the seat broke off of one of them and I checked the other two and they both have cracks on the sides of the seats where it attaches to the frame. Is this common? No one in our office is over 200lbs, the chairs are only about 5 years old. We're having the chairs covered by the warranty, but is this commone? Has the design of the seat been changed so this won't happen with any new chairs we order or is this the life expectancy of these seats?
James
2010-06-13 - I just got home an hour ago with two new Aeron chairs. One of the chairs has the polished aluminum base. As you know, the chairs are shipped with a plastic tape of some kind wrapped around the legs. The tape was easily removed from the graphite base; however there is a sticky glue/tape residue stuck on the polished aluminum base. Is is very sticky and dull instead of shiney where the glue is. How should I remove this residue without damaging the polished surface?

2010-05-18 - When removing the broken seat pan from my Aeron the threaded inserts remained attached to the hip pivot screws. The threaded inserts are the metal cylinders molded into each side of the plastic seat frame, for the hip pivot screws to screw into. They are hollow metal cylinders with threads (grooves) on the inside surface. I can not remove them from the pivots to allow me to put the new seat pan on

2010-05-11 - I just received my Aeron with Posturefit and the instructions say to remove the control cable from the clip. Yeah right! I was about ready to roll up my sleeves and go nuts on the grommet when I noticed instructions from the authorized dealer. YOU DON'T NEED TO TAKE THE CLIP OFF THE CABLE. Push the cable through the pellicle first and then snap the clip onto the chair. Just don't kink the cable when pushing it through the pellicle. Then put the wishbone on, thread the cable and screw the clip tight.

2010-04-18 - My daughter spilled nail polish on the seat of my Aeron chair. I was able to get most of it off, but can still see the stain where the nail polish was.
Any suggestions on what I can use to clean the chair seat without damaging it further.

2010-03-05 - I just bought what the seller says is a "B" model. How can I tell? I can't seem to find a model or serial number anywhere on the chair. Thank you, Marty
Marty
Aerons.com: The easiest way to find out a chair size is to start at the back of the chair. At the top of the back you will see a Hermn Miller logo imprinted in the frame. Reach a finger behind the logo and feel for raised dots on the frame. 1=A, 2=B, 3=C.
2010-01-02 - I have an aereon with a bad cylinder, I got the cylinder out of the star base, but I cannot figure out how to remove the part of the cylinder from the bottom of the chair unir. Is there a blowup of the mechanisms somewhere ? Thanks for any advice.
George Keen
Aerons.com: Cylinders can be tricky repairs, there is more to it than just the pneumatic shaft on the bottom of the chair. The best way to remove the cylinder from the bottom of the mechanism is to use a Lift-Off tool. We have them available for DIYers, just give us a call at 1-888-677-1600
2010-01-01 - I have an Aeron with thumb wheel adjusting arm rests - I've had it for about a decade and a half. The bolt holding the right arm in its track snapped and it looks like the bolt is the only part that broke. I would like to repair it myself. I have a hex wrench that works and a screwdriver that works on the smaller bolt heads. But what part do I need, and is there a resource for instructions? The parts inside the track look like they include a plastic sheath and a spring of some kind. I don't want to get in over my head.
Many thanks for advice.
Jason K
Aerons.com: There is a replacement kit available that has all of the springs and washers on the new bolt. Be careful to follow the directions, putting the parts in backward or in the wrong order will cause the arm to not hold properly. We do have some of these kits in stock, call us at 1-888-677-1600
2009-12-28 - Posture vs. Lumbar
Which model is more popular and why? Not being able to test the which should I buy?
Thanks
Bruce O
Aerons.com: The model with lumbar still maintains a slight advantage when it comes to popularity, some of this stems from business purchases. PostureFit is a popular choice made by individual chair owners because of the superior lower back support. I like to describe the two options as proactive vs reactive back support. The lumbar offers more reactive support putting pressure directly on the spine and lower back muscles, pushing ones back into a proper sitting position. The PostureFit is proactive by placing pressure lower (on the pelvis) and keeping the pelvis rotated forward while you are seated. By keeping the pelvis forward, the spine is more naturally aligned, which provides a more healthful sit, reduces muscle fatigue, and maximizes lower body blood flow.
2009-12-27 - Before I order a couple of Aeron chairs I want to see real samples of the fabric colors; the online representations are weak.

2009-08-30 - I posted a question about my cylinder on 8/24/09 and did contact ChairMD as you suggested, and I wanted to provide some follow-up information that would be of general interesst to anyone who has the same difficulty I did with my squeaking cylinder.
ChairMD warns that you do not re-lubricate your cylinder with WD-40.
If one wishes to eliminate groans in their cylinder, ONLY re-lubricate with 100% silicone spray or lithium grease.
Again, DO NOT use WD-40.
Thought you might want to post this information as an addendum to my original question, so that a general reader does not re-lube with WD-40 or anything that will be harmful to the cylinder and void the warranty.

2009-08-28 - I would like to know what is the difference between the AE111, AE112 and the AE113?
carly vermes
Aerons.com: The numbers determine the tilt specifications for the chair: 111 is standard tilt, 112 is tilt limiter, 113 is tilt limiter and seat angle.
2009-08-24 - Lately when I sit in my Aeron Chair it groans and lowers by a small amount or so.........I don't recall this happening before, especially the groan.........it sounds like being on a ship as it torques in the waves, or being in a high-rise during a wind storm when you hear the steel girders slightly bend and groan.
Any thoughts??
Michael B
Aerons.com: You need to have your cylinder checked out. We recommend that you call the Aeron experts over at www.ChairMD.com.
2009-08-19 - I'm looking at the PDF for the Aeron Work Chair, but can't figure out what the difference is between the AE111, AE112 and AE113 variants. Can you help explain this?
Greg
2009-08-19 - Duh, just figured it out.
111 is standard tilt
112 is tilt limiter
113 is tilt limiter and seat angle
Thanks

2009-08-19 - Where's my Aeron HEADREST!
After much personal research into this topic, I have learned that there IS an office chair which has a headrest which can perfectly snap directly onto the Aaron without any modification. At last, a solution.
This chair is the 9to5seating STRATA chair headrest option. I found it at officeplanners dot com for $84.
I have personally found that this headrest snaps easily onto my Aeron which is a size C. I have not tried putting it onto a Size A or B of the Aeron.
Note: I have found that this headrest works best of the user is at least 6 feet tall, otherwise the head-pad will be positioned to high for the user's head.
In short, it's a perfect fit for me. I have purchased one for each of my Aerons at home.
PS: I do not work for any chair company, just want to help those who might have the same problem that I had with my Aeron.
Fabian Lamaestra
Aerons.com: I feel it only prudent to advise anyone looking to attach aftermarket parts to an Aeron chair. If the part has not been approved by Herman Miller, and is the direct or indirect cause of any damage to the chair your warranty becomes null and void. It is for this reason that we do not recommend adding aftermarket parts to your Aeron chair unless they are approved by Herman Miller and purchased through authorized dealers.
2009-08-14 - Where do you find a black graphite replacement part for an older Herman Miller ergo chair?
Gman
Aerons.com: We recommend calling www.ChairMD.com for all repair and part needs. They have very knowledgable technicians that can answer any of your questions or assist in giving instructions and carry all Herman Miller factory parts. Their number is 877-349-2424.
2009-08-12 - On my Aeron chair the center post extends very low to the ground, it tends to rub and scrape on my floor mat as I move around. i've even had the clip on the bottom pop off once as it got caught on the edge of something.
I am assuming this is not normal. How do i adjust this post so that it doesn't extend so close to the ground?
Brent
Aerons.com: What you are experiencing is normal. The cylinder for an Aeron chair typically ride 1/2in from the floor. If you have the chair on carpet, even with a floor mat, the cylinder can scrap against the floor and work the retaining clip loose. There are two different fixes for this problem. Herman Miller started manufacturing the chairs with a recessed bottom to protect the clip. This cylinder can be retro-fitted into the chair if the cylinder ever fails. Or, you can get a higher caster and lift the chair up by 1/2in, thus giving the cylinder a 1in clearance. We recommend calling www.ChairMD.com for help in doing either of these as they also sell the parts.
2009-08-12 - I'm shopping for an Aeron and don't understand the difference between the aluminum frame and the titanium frame. Can you help me by describing which parts of the chair are made of the respective materials or are these just color descriptions? Thank you!
John H
Aerons.com: It has to do with the finish on the chair. Starting with a graphite frame chair, the seat and back frame are graphite (dark grey) and the metal chair frame is also graphite (dark grey). If you choose polished aluminum, the seat and back frames remain graphite, but the chair frame becomes a mirrored polished aluminum finish. On titanium chairs the seat and back frame color is smoke (light grey) and the metal chair frame is titanium.
Here is an answer to another popular question: When they say graphite or titanium; is the chair frame made out of that metal?
No. The frame is always made of cast aluminum. The graphite or titanium color is a durable powder coat over the aluminum frame at the factory.
2009-08-11 - How do I know which size chair to order, A, B or C? I am 5'8" female.
Pam
Aerons.com: A size chairs are meant for people under 5ft 3in
B size charis 5ft 3in - 6ft 130lbs to 300lbs
C size chairs 5ft 10in and taller males & 5ft 8in and taller females - or anyone with an inseam of 30in or greater.
2009-08-07 - The tilt controls for the back and seat are not intuitive. This might help:
The tilt control levers are on the left. Sometimes you may have to rock in the seat to get a lever to release and move.
Back tilt – rear lever -
Seat tilt – front lever -
Controlling the back tilt:
1. Press the back lever down to unlock, up to lock
2. the lever controls 4 positions for the back: full up (lever fully up), full back (lever fully down), and two in between
Controlling the seat tilt:
1. To lock in the “tilt forward’ position, you must unlock the back (rear lever down) and unlock the seat (front lever up), tilt fully forward in the seat, then lock both the back lever (pull up) and the seat lever (push down). The seat will tilt forward but not back.
2. to lock the seat in “tilt back,” leave the seat locked, unlock the back, then lean back. The seat will tilt back and lock there, and not tilt forward. You can then leave the back locked or unlocked.
3. If you then leave the back locked, and unlock the seat, it will tilt forward and back, but if you then lock the seat, it will lock tilted back, and not tilt forward.
Run through these instructions 3-4 times with the chair and it will become clear.
Lance Mason
2009-07-29 - I have a Herman Miller Aeron chair that I bought used. I recently moved and I now notice that when I lift the chair by the arms, it comes out of the base. Is this normal? Also, it appears that a couple washers, a spacer and a broken clip with some bearings came out of the chair. What do I need to fix it?
Kris
Aerons.com: We think this issue would be best handled by the trained professionals at www.ChairMD.com. Call them at 877-349-2424 and they should be able to fix your chair or give you the advice you need to make the repairs.
2009-07-28 - I have an Aeron chair the most comfortable office chair on the planet. Today is it's 11th birthday. The seat back pelicle is coming apart, I contacted the dealer I purchased it from 11 years ago and they tell me it is out of warranty. I have just read on this blog that all Aeron Chairs have a 12 year parts and labor warranty. What do I need to do to get my chair fixed?
Charlie Girardi
Aerons.com: We recommend that you contact the folks at www.ChairMD.com (877-349-2424). They will be able to verify the warranty status of the chair and fix it for free.
2009-07-11 - Is there any head rest for aeron? Glad you should ask!!!
I have seen a headrest for the Herman Miller Aeron. It can be seen in the Movie "Stealth".
In my opinion, it would not make any sense for a chair company to make several dummy Aeron headrests for a movie, as this would be wasted marketing attempt.
You can see this headrest clearly all throughout the movie when the military officers are remotely controlling the aircrafts from their ground computers.
I have also talked with several Aeron repair contractors which indicate they have gotten other headrests to fit the Aeron because they receive so many complaints of next pain and poor head support.
Thanks,
F.
Fabian Lamaestra
Aerons.com: The movie production company made these headrests themselves out of PostureFit back supports with heavy modification. Unfortunately modifications like this void the Herman Miller warranty, so we cannot recommend doing this.
2009-07-08 - Am I doing something wrong? My "loaded" Size A chair doesn't seem to adjust. I've been leaning back and trying to pull up on the "tilt forward" lever, but it seems to be locked in place. Also, what area should I feel adjusting when I turn the PostureFit adjustment knob?
Joan
2009-06-23 - Do the deep carpet casters really work well on carpets? Before I invest the $50.00 I'd like to be confident that rolling will be significantly improved. Thanks.
victor van winkl
Aerons.com: The deep carpet casters allow the chair to ride higher off the carpet than the traditional carpet casters. This makes the chair easier to roll, and creates less damage to carpet over time.
2009-06-19 - I have an old (about 10 yrs or so) aeron chair that I bought used from someone else. Recently, when I lean back in the chair and then go forward, it makes a noise when the chair comes out of the tilt. Is this cause for concern or is there something I should do (like oil it or something)? Thank you for your assistance.
kim
Aerons.com: Make sure you fully disengage the forward tilt or tilt limiter. Depending on how the chair has been used over the years some of the gears could be stripping.
2009-06-18 - Are Aeron and Embody casters interchangeable? I'd like to know if it is possible to use the 3" deep carpet Aeron caster on the Embody chair.
Dave
Aerons.com: The Aeron and Embody chairs use the same size caster stem, just pull one off and snap the other on.
2009-06-16 - AE113AWB - is this a size B classic chair with no adjustments?
JKeller
Aerons.com: This is a highly adjustable size B chair with forward tilt, rear tilt limiter, arms that adjustable up and down, and pivot in and out.
2009-06-16 - What advantages / improvements does the new Embody chair have over the Aeron? I am trying to decide between the two and want the best. Thank you.
John
2009-06-13 - how does the aeron chair compare to the equa chair? I'm a first time buyer looking for a new chair for my husband.
tucker
Aerons.com: Like a Mercedes to a Ford. The ergonomic functionality of the Aeron is decades ahead of the Equa chair. For comfort, durability, and flexibility of use; you cannot go wrong with an Aeron.
2009-06-10 - Does the Aeron require any type of routine lubrication?
Bruce W
Aerons.com: Aeron chairs require some general maintainance to prolong the life on the chair, but by know means is it hard. The biggest thing Herman Miller recommends is keeping the chair clean. Wipe down the chair seat and back, base, arms, and mechanism. DO NOT wipe down the cylinder!! Doing so will remove the lubricant. You should never use anything harder than diluted dish soap to clean your chair. The second thing that is highly recommended is keeping the floor around the chair clean. Vacuuming or dusting your floor regularly will help keep the cylinder from getting dirty and the mechanism from sticking.
2009-06-10 - Can the Aeron B take either the lumbar kit or the posture fit kit?
Paul King
Aerons.com: Any size Aeron task chair has the option of the standard lumbar pillow or PostureFit.
2009-06-10 - Is there any way to adjust adjust the arms on a Aeron basic chair.
I just bought a used chair in great shape not realizing that not all
Aerons are created equal. If any one knows how to adjust the arm height or if they can be converted to fully adjustable, Please let me know.
M. John
Aerons.com: Yes, the arms on a basic chair can be adjusted. Remove the back using a 5mm Hex wrench. Then look at the inside of the arm, you will find a small T-27 Torx screw. Remove this screw and the arm will come off. With the arm removed, take out the spacer or plug from the arm track. Attach the arm and move to desired height and tighten down. Replace the back and then you are finished.
2009-06-09 - I recently purchased a used Aeron chair, so no warranty. I've just noticed that a couple of the threads have broken at the front of the seat where the mesh meets the frame, just under my thigh. Right now the tear is less than half an inch long. I'm sure this is just normal wear and tear, but what can I do to discourage the tear from getting larger? One idea I've heard was that putting some clear nail polish on it would help strengthen the threads. Is this a good idea? Any other ideas?
Kenny
Aerons.com: You can try the clear nail polish; but it probably will not help in the long run. The Aeron seats are stretched tight to create the hammock effect that makes the chair so comfortable. You should look into a new seat, we recommend calling www.ChairMD.com. If a new seat is out of your budget reach they may have also have used or refurbished ones for a lower price.
2009-06-06 - My Aeron chair rocks slightly from left to right. Is this unusual?
Thanks,
victor van winkl
Aerons.com: This is normal. The slight left to right motion is to allow you to move more freely within the chair.
2009-06-06 - My chair squeaks. How do I find out how to lubricate it?
Thomas Paben
Aerons.com: We recommend calling www.ChairMD.com. Chair squeaks from different areas can mean different things and require different lubricants, they will be able to walk you through this in great detail.
2009-06-03 - The left arm rest on my aeron(postureFit) has wobbled at the highest position. This symptom appears only when the left arm rest reach the highest position(of course, the arm rest lever is locked). But then, the right arm rest firmly at the same position.
Have you ever seen this problem? How do I fix it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Wat
Aerons.com: This is a problem we have heard about a couple times. Contact www.ChairMD.com they can help you get your chair fixed. If you have an Aeron where the arms tighten with a thumb wheel it is as easy as adjusting a screw. If you have the flip lever style the arm needs to be replaced.
2009-06-03 - I have an Aeron Chair in my home office for about 7 years now. It was used regularly for the first 3 year as my wife worked from home. It's molded plastic at the back of the seat has cracked and we barely have used the chair for several years now. I love these chairs and use them at work....I've put many thousands of hours in them. What can I do about the broken mold. it seems unnatural?
Ray Jackson
Aerons.com: We recommend wou contact www.ChairMD.com. They can assist you in fixing your chair. The seat breaking on an Aeron chair is not an everyday occurance, but it is not unusual either. In recent years Herman Miller has changed the formulation of the seat plastic to make it harder and less likely to become damaged.
2009-06-02 - I've had my Aeron chair for a few months and noticed that the seat height sinks after a couple of days. Is this normal? How can I keep the chair from adjusting itself?
Monica
Aerons.com: This is not normal. It sounds like either your cylinder needs to be adjusted or replaced. We recommend www.ChairMD.com for all service related questions. They are truly the experts and often we consult with them before posting our response.
2009-06-02 - the 'arms' that the seat is supported by seem to be connected by bolts - my chair has lost its bolt on ones side - what bolt do i need for a replacement?
paul
Aerons.com: You would need a Hip Pivot bolt. We were able to talk to www.ChairMD.com and they have them in stock. You can give them a call at 877-349-2424 and they can help you out.
2009-05-27 - I just received my Aeron with posturefit and am having trouble assembling it. The instructions say to remove the control cable from the clip but I see no way of doing this without breaking the plastic grommit which is already snapped into place. Im pretty good with "assembly required" but this just isnt intuitive.
Cal
Aerons.com: The instructions may be difficult to explain in this blog, especially since we cannot see which steps are difficult to understand. We recommend calling the dealer/ retailer you bought your chair from. They will be able to answer any of your questions over the phone. In the meantime here is a link to the PostureFit instructions from one of our recommended authorized retailers: http://www.officedesigns.com/info_links/pfassembly.pdf
2009-05-24 - The mesh on the seat ripped on my Aeron size C that has passed the 5-year mark for mesh warranty in Jan 09. A seat mesh(without seat pan) is available for $40.
Is it possible to replace the ripped seat mesh from the chair with this new mesh or do I have to buy a seat with the frame and mesh? A seller has size c frame and mesh available locally for $110. Is it easy to replace frame&mesh? Thanks.
Dan Silver
Aerons.com: Whoever told you that you only have a 5 year warranty on your seat is wrong. If you bought your chair from an Authorized Herman Miller dealer/ retailer you have a 12 year parts and labor warranty. It is nearly impossible to get a mesh insert back into a seat or back frame once it has left the factory. This is because if you do not have the tension right, or if the mesh is not in a balanced manner; the mesh will ripple and sag. It is much easier to just have the entire seat replaced. We recommend calling www.ChairMD.com for your repairs (877-349-2424).
2009-05-20 - Have an aeron chair and would like to remove the arms. Any suggestions? Cannot figure it out on my own. The back of the arms have no "clips" and these are not screwed in but on an internal track. Please help!
Donna Collins
Aerons.com: This is similar to a question we received on the 19th, here is our advice: Unlike the old wheel arms the flip lever arms are unable to be removed from an Aeron chair. We spoke to a number of sources including ChairMD. ChairMD stated that if you want to remove the arms from a current Aeron chair, the swing arm (the piece that the arms, back, and seat attach to) would need to be replaced. We suggest calling ChairMD if this is a process you want to do.
2009-05-19 - I'm trying to determine the size of the seat of my Aeron chair. I know that I have a Size B back. In many of the answers below, there are references to a "warranty sticker" or a "born on stamp" on the base but I can't find either of those on my chair. Where do I find a "warranty sticker" or a "born on stamp"? The packing slip that came with my chair says I have the following SKU: AE-CBV. Does that mean I have a Size B seat? Also, since I know I have a Size B back and the back and the seat fit together, does that mean that I have a Size B seat? Thanks.

Aerons.com: If you have a size B back you have to have a size B seat. The various sizes are not interchangable on the same chair. To determine the size, look on the back of your chair near the top at the Herman Miller logo. Behind the logo you can feel raised dots. One dot indicates size A, two for size B, and three for a size C chair.
2009-05-19 - I have been given an Aeron chair to sit in at work that has been used and it wobbles from side to side, is it supposed to do that? I have 2 herniated disks, L4 & L5.
Georgia
Aerons.com: Aeron chairs have a small amount of side to side wobble. This wobble is more pronounced in chairs with a dual stage cylinder that are over 4 years old.
2009-05-19 - I want to remove the flip-lever adjustable arms on my Aeron. I've removed the back, but I can't seem to unscrew the arm rests using the Torx T-27; the screws just spin and click, but no loosening of the screws occur. What am I missing??
BTY
Aerons.com: Unlike the old wheel arms the flip lever arms are unable to be removed from an Aeron chair. We spoke to a number of sources including www.ChairMD.com. ChairMD stated that if you want to remove the arms from a current Aeron chair, the swing arm (the piece that the arms, back, and seat attach to) would need to be replaced. We suggest calling ChairMD (877-349-2424) if this is a process you want to do.
2009-05-19 - aeron tilt mechanism repair
Wilbur Bobila
Aerons.com: Depending on the tilt problem, many different options exist. Call the experts over at www.ChairMD.com. They can diagnose the problem and get you the parts necessary to fix your chair. They can also help you find out if your chair is under warranty.
2009-05-13 - I was very impressed with www.OfficeDesigns.com and also with the follow up with our order. I love my new Aeron!
Fran
2009-05-13 - Im looking at buying my first Aeron soon but I have one question...
I have a bad back and the pain can range from the lower back up to the shoulders on any given day.
I would appreciate any personal experience feedback regarding both the lumbar pillow or the posturefit options. Thanks in advance.
Cal
Aerons.com: It is really a personal preference between PostureFit and standard lumbar. It breaks down like this:
PostureFit is designed to fill the void between your lower back and your chair when in a seated posture. It does this by adding a slight amount of pressure to the pelvis and keeping the pelvis from rotating back when sitting. By keeping the pelvis forward, the spine is more naturally aligned and naturally reduces lower back pressure. PostureFit can be adjusted in pressure but not in height.
Standard Lumbar is designed to provide direct positive pressure to the back and spine. This pressure pushes your back closer to natural alignment. The standard lumbar has two sides by which to change the amount of pressure and can be adjusted 6 inches vertically to fit in the lumbar region of the lower back.
PostureFit is proactive where the standard lumber is reactive.
2009-05-03 - I just bought a great condition used size C. The only problem is that when I have it reclined past a certain point, my butt hits the box under the seat. The pellicle is not stretched out and I am an average weight. Is there any way to adjust for this (make the seat higher off the box?)
AZ
Aerons.com: The best thing to do is add tension to the tilt limiter. You do this by turning the knob on the right side of the chair. It can take 15 - 20 turns before you feel any significant difference in the tension.
2009-05-01 - Where is a Aeron showroom in Los Angeles to actually sit in these chairs?
abculater@mac.com
Alan Connell
Aerons.com: There are showrooms across the country to try the Aeron chair and many other Herman Miller products. We suggest going to http://hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Locator/1,,a10-c501,00.html
2009-04-29 - I'm sitting in a size C and have a pressure point under my legs where the padding under the pellicle is located. I have heard of people removing this padding to relieve this condition. How can this be done? What side effects might this have?
Peter
2009-04-27 - How do I clean the armrests of my Aeron chair? The FAQ only gives information on cleaning the Pellicle back of the chair.
Donna
Aerons.com: If the arm rests are vinyl: warm soap and water; if they are leather we recommend a product named Lexol.
2009-04-24 - I have a Herman Miller Aeron chair and I was adjusting the height ..I heard air go out of it and now I can't get it to go back up
KathyAnn Parris
Aerons.com: Your cylinder has failed and needs to be replaced. Call the folks over at www.ChairMD.com; they can help you get parts or your chair fixed under warranty if you are the original owner.
2009-04-21 - i am wokring on a design class project where we are looking at innovations and breakthrough designs and I have choosen aeron chair because I find it suits the topic and best example in recent time and furniture industry

Aerons.com: Right on! Having won numerous awards including the Time Magazine Design of the Decade and a permanent spot in the New York Museum of Modern Art; you cannot go wrong.
2009-04-08 - I have 4 aeron chairs that I need to ship out since i am moving to another state. I read that I can dissemble the back by removing the 4 bolts at the back, do I need any special tools to do that?
J. G.
Aerons.com: You will need a 5mm hex wrench.
2009-04-06 - I've got a used Mirra with tilt-limiter and -tension, but not forward-tilt. I'm guessing that for non-basic models, the replacement is as simple as swapping out the rod/limiter lever with the forward/limiter version. Since my warranty is out, I'll willing to do the modification myself. Where can I get the part and retrofit instructions to do this?
Morris
2009-04-05 - Hi, I have a Aeron chair and have to move. Last time this cost me 260$ just to ship the chair because it was to be boxed in a size that requires this pricing. His anyone taken apart the chair (or at least the back off) and then put it back together successfully?
Thanks
Kevin
Aerons.com: Many companies including Herman Miller remove the back to ship the chair. UPS Store and FedEx Office both sell a 25x25x25 inch box that will accommodate the chair without the back attached. To remove the back, look behind the chair. There are 4 bolts on the back of the chair. Remove these and the back comes off. Lower the chair to its lowest point and then it will fit into a 26x26x26 inch box.
2009-03-31 - I moved recently and my Aeron chair (I bought it used and there is no warranty sticker) arrived at my new place with the cylinder removed from the 5-star base. When I try to re-insert the cylinder it goes through the base to the floor. I spoke with two places who say the only thing I can do is replace the entire cylinder for over $150.00. That seems unnecessary and, besides, is more than I can afford at the moment. Someone else suggested an after-market 5-piece kit that would contain cylinder bearings. Where would I get this? What do I look for? Will it work? Will I know what to do with it if I do???? HELP!!
THANKS
Lynne
Aerons.com: We were unable to find a reliable source to get this bearing set from. We did talk to the guys at ChairMD and asked why they would not sell just the clip and bearing set, this is the explaination they gave me: When the cylinder for an Aeron chair drops through the cylinder housing, it does so with so much force as to break the bearing set. Herman Miller used to offer these as a stand alone part. They did some research and found that chairs where the cylinder fell through, were much more likely to have a complete cylinder failure in the life span of the chair; due to the force of the cylinder dropping. For this reason Herman Miller only sends the bearings as part of a complete cylinder kit.
2009-03-27 - I have ordered several Aeron Chairs from www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com and I really like the way they do business.
Ron
2009-03-25 - I just purchased an Aeron chair (Size B) and the middle post is scraping against my plastic floor mat that help protect wear/tear on my carpet. Do you have any recommedations on how to raise the chair.
Eric C
Aerons.com: We recommend going with 3 inch carpet or hardfloor casters. This will raise your chair up 1/2 an inch which for most people is more than enough. The other option you can look into is a better rigid floor mat.
2009-03-24 - I have had my Aeron chair since 2000 with little to no trouble with it. Recently, though, the plastic around the seat pan back broke and now the pan leans forward and is uncomfortable. I purchased the chair through a large direct purchase from Herman Miller through the company I worked for at that time. Is this chair covered by the 12-Year Warranty? Is so, how do I have it repaired and if not, is it possible to get the seat pan replaced?
Dave Pruiksma
Aerons.com: Your best bet is to call www.ChairMD.com (877-349-2424) to help you with your seat problem. The warranty issue is difficult to determine due to the way in which you bought your chair. If your chair cannot be covered by warranty they do sell the parts as well.
2009-03-23 - I recently purchassed an Aeron chair from a company that had gone out of business. The chair is in great condition. It has a born date in 2001. Since i didn't perchase the chair from an Aeron dealer, is it still under warrenty?
Victor Van Winkl
Aerons.com: Only chairs purchased as new from an Authorized Herman Miller Retailer are covered by the Herman Miller 12 year warranty. This is one of the many reasons we highly recommend purchasing from authorized dealers to insure a positive experience throughout the life of the Aeron.
2009-03-16 - Just contacted www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com and was told they do not offer bottom seat covers. Does anyone know where we could order one?
Alexis
Aerons.com: We contacted www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com and discovered they have begun outsourcing their repair work to www.ChairMD.com. They have a black fabric cover for Aeron chairs in sizes B and C.
2009-03-15 - Can anyone help? I recently picked up a S/H Mirra chair which works fine apart from it squeaks when reclining the back. This appears to occur just before reaching the maximum recline angle, then occurs again at the same point when returning back to the upright position. Although I can't be 100% sure, I think it's coming from somewhere inside the enclosed mechanism underneath the seat? Would anyone know what might be causing this and if so, if there's anything I can do to rectify it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Andy E
Aerons.com: The mechanism needs to be lubed. The catch is that it has to be done by a trained Herman Miller seating technician. www.ChairMD.com is a company that can handle this for you, we recommend you check them out.
2009-03-14 - The height adjustment on my chair is slipping. I have to raise the chair back up 1 or 2 times a day. When I try to adjust it, the mechanism is not at all smooth. It catches and and sometimes gets stuck. Any thoughts?
Harry
Aerons.com: You need a new cylinder. Call the folks at www.ChairMD.com, they can walk you through either ordering the parts or having the chair repaired.
2009-03-07 - I recently bought a C size fully adjustable Aeron chair. I would really like to be able to lock the chair about halfway between the forward tilt position and the neutral position. I know that the rocking mechanism is one of the chair's advantages for many people, but I find the rest of the chair very comfortable, save for not being able to lock it into position.
Is there any way to modify the chair's mechanism to accomplish this?
William
Aerons.com: There is no way to modify the mechanism to lock the chair in a reclined position. However, you can make the chair work with you to achieve a movement that will come close to replicating this. Increase the tilt tension on your chair by turning the knob on the right side. It may take a lot of revolutions to increase the tension to the point where it takes effort to recline the chair. Once the chair is that tight, begin to turn the tension to remove resistance until you can tilt back as far as you want to go using some effort. The other way you can do this is to increase your tilt tension and tilt back to a position that you are comfortable. Once ther pull up on the rear left lever to engage the tilt limiter. Once engaged you can sit up in the chair, but the chair will not tilt back beyond that point.
2009-03-05 - Is it possible to remove the casters, or lock them? My mother has difficulty walking and getting in and out of a chair. the Aeron chair is very comfortable for her, but it is unsteady for her to get in and out of. any recommendations?
lisbeth
Aerons.com: Casters can be removed and replaced with a non-rolling glide. Since you already own the chair we suggest you contact www.ChairMD.com, they sell these as parts and they are very easy to switch on the chair.
2009-03-05 - My left armrest also broke off... the bolt cracked... and there does not seem to be a way to remove the broken bolt from the armrest.
I'm only too happy to buy the parts... I just don't know what I need...or is there a repair facility in South Florida ?
Mike
Aerons.com: We recommend calling www.ChairMD.com. These guys really know their stuff and can help you get the arm of your chair fixed.
2009-03-01 - Les: you must go in person to try out the b & c to gauge which size fits you and if the chair will meet your expectations. nevermind the sizing charts. second, do you keep your wrists in neutral position? do you have an ergonomic keyboard tray that is height adjustable AND has negative tilt? this is just as important as the chair. maybe even more for just your wrists since you've used an armless chair (not a bad idea). the aeron's forward tilt is really good for the wrists. the downside is that your back (as in my case) may need time to get used forward tilt. i use the computer a lot too. my combination of aeron chair, fully adjustable keyboard tray, height adjustable rear mouse bridge to go over the numeric keypad, and attention to be ergonomically sound - allow me to spend hours on the computer without problems. i definitely understand your troubles.
Sanjay
2009-02-27 - I am a six feet tall man but thin, 150 pounds. Would size B or C be appropriate for me?
Also I do many hours of computer work (sound editing and mix) and have had issues with sore hands, wrists, shoulders, etc.. I have been using another brand adjustable office chair with no arm rests. Will the pricey Aeron really make a difference that would be worth the money? Thanks.
Les Brockmann
2009-02-27 - Excellent chair, excellent customer support from www.OfficeDesigns.com, excellent shipping, reasonable price. What more can you ask for? If you have any doubt whether to get a Herman Miller Aeron chair (is it really woth it?, etc.) STOP - go buy it, it's worth every penny especially if you're going to be using it a lot. I bought one for my wife's office as well. Excellent and nothing short of that. Great service overall from www.OfficeDesigns.com.
James
2009-02-26 - I read all these things about the Aeron chair being 'easy to disassemble'...... I need to move it from LA to NYC, are there disassembly instructions anywhere online?
Hector
Aerons.com: There are 4 bolts on the back of the chair. Remove these and the back comes off. Lower the chair to its lowest point and then it will fit into a 26x26x26 inch box that you can buy at any UPS store.
2009-02-25 - Is there some place where we can obtain an owner's manual?
Thank you.
Karen Wicks
Aerons.com: Go to www.ChairMD.com; this is a consumer repair site for Herman Miller seating. We spoke with them and they said they have them available for a small charge.
2009-02-23 - Do you have to have a lumbar pad? Will you harm the chair back if you don't use anything. Sorry for the multiple questions, but I can't find the answer to this anywhere.
Kent Hagen
Aerons.com: You do not need a lumbar pillow, it will not harm the chair if it has one or not. In fact, most of the Basic Aeron chairs on the market do not have them. One of the nice things about the Aeron chair is that the lumbar can be added or changed at any time in the life cycle of the chair.
2009-02-23 - How can I tell what size chair I have? Imagine this has been asked many times before, but I couldn't find the answer using google.
Chick Lewis
Aerons.com: On the back of your chair near the top there is a Herman Miller logo. Behind the logo you can feel raised dots. One dot indicates size A, two for size B, and three for a size C chair.
2009-02-23 - Thanks ! previous answer was:
Aerons.com: There are two easy ways to tell the size of an Aeron chair. 1. The manufacturing label of the chair. When you see the chair code AE113AWC, for example, the C is the chair size. 2. If you turn the chair so the back is facing you; you will see Herman Miller printed into the top of the back. Reach a finger between the frame and the Pellicle material and you should feel braille dots. 1 dot for A, 2 for B, and 3 for C."

2009-02-23 - What is the difference between the wave and the classic fabric? Any advantage in feel and comfort of either one? What is the difference between mineralite and pyrite?...Many thanks.
Jackie
Aerons.com: There are no structural or comfort differences between Classic and Wave Pellicle. The difference is purely aesthetic, the wave tends to give a softer look. Mineralite is only available on the titanium frame in a silvery brown color. Pyrite is available on either graphite or polished aluminum frames and is a golden brown. Both colors were discontinued by Herman Miller last year, but are still covered by their 12 year warranty.
2009-02-23 - Where can I find a low cost lumbar pad for my Aeron. Mark, below, suggests I can get "low cost parts". My lumbar pad has cracked. I'm trying to glue it back together. Assuming I'm going to fail I need a new one, costing $55!! That's quite a lot. If any of you know where I can obtain a low cost pad I'd sure appreciate it.
Kent
Aerons.com: Be weary of people who claim they have low cost parts. Many times they are used or not original Herman Miller parts, both of which carry their own problems. www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com operates a site called www.PreOwnedAerons.com, give them a call; they only keep and resell what is in a certifiable condition. Another question would be is your chair under warranty? If it is you can get a free replacement lumbar. We recommend www.ChairMD.com if you want to get one under warranty.
2009-02-22 - The Lumbar Pad on my Aeron B has self destructed. Has anyone tried to glue one back together? The break is horizontal, not vertical on the pad. What of glue did you use? Can you use the chair without destroying it without the Lumbar Pad??
Thanks very much,
Kent, sitting stiffly upright.
Kent
2009-02-21 - The back support on my aeron has developed a horizontal separation, probably due my lying backwards over the years. It fits in place OK and supports. I'd just like to glue it back together to give it the strength it once had.
Thanks for any help.
Kent
Aerons.com: That lumbar spliting is covered under your warranty, or if your chair does not have a warranty they only cost $60 from most retailers.
2009-02-18 - Can the Aeron castors for high pile carpet be used on other brand office chairs?
Victor Van Winkl
Aerons.com: They can as long as the caster pin is 3/8 of an inch in diameter.
2009-02-17 - How can fixed armrests be removed?
Tim
Aerons.com: If you remove the back of the chair you will see a screw on each side that holds the arms in place. Remove this screw and the arms will come off.
2009-02-15 - I prefer to use armrests for support when typing and I don't pivot them in or out but deliberately keep them neutral. Forward tilt is very comfortable for my wrists when I'm computing with the said preferences. The downside is that my mid back doesn't seem to get the same support as it does when I lock the Aeron upright (great for writing) or recline back (excellent for reading). In forward tilt, my midback no longer utilizes the rest of the seat back i.e. the area above Posturefit. My midback is now leaning forward instead of against the seat back. It's almost like I'm slouching. I keep my back straight but even then it only touches the seat back rather than lean back & rest its weight and get support as it does when the chair is upright or reclined. Perhaps I need time to get used to it or maybe forward tilt is not right for me? Could you please give me some suggestions for getting maximum back support while using forward tilt? It is a very promising feature for my wrists. I'm 5' 9" on a size B. I do raise the seat height when tilting the chair forward. Forward tilt is fine for 10-15 minutes but afterwards my back gets tired. In the other positions, I can sit for hours without any complaint. If I can get this issue resolved I may buy one for home use too. Thank you very much!
Sanjay
Aerons.com: Part of the discomfort that you are feeling is because your back is not used to sitting so straight. Try lowering your seat height slightly. Also, it is recommended that every 15-20 minutes you change your seated position.
2009-02-12 - I have an Aeron chair. How can I determine which size it is? (a, b, or c) Thanks.
Doug
Aerons.com: On the back of your Aeron chair there is a Herman Miller logo. Behind the logo there are dots that indicate the size of your chair. One dot for A, two for B, and three dots for a C.
2009-02-11 - I just received my aeron with lumbar support and am having a difficult time assembling it. It seems it was shipped with the cable clip pre-installed onto the back of the chair, consequently I find I cannot slide the chair back down the guides to attach it, as the cable clip gets hung up on the chair seat. The cable clip appears to have been attached with a power screwdriver and is so far resisting my efforts to unscrew it using a hand-held screwdriver. I don't want to strip the screw head. Is there an alternative way to assemble the aeron or conversely a "trick" to removing the clip? Thanks
Susan Mearns
Aerons.com: Not knowing which Aeron model you bought or who you bought it from, we recommend you call the retailer/ dealer you purchased the chair through.
2009-02-11 - I just received my new Aeron yesterday from Officedesigns.com (per your recommendation). It's the highly adjustable variety in size B. I'm 5'9" and weigh about 180 lbs. There problem I'm having is this, the foam insert at the front edge of the seat bottom seems to be putting a too much pressure on the underside of my thighs behind my knees. I know I can simply lower the chair which does seem to alleviate the problem, but it then makes the chair too low (my desktop is 31.5" high). I was thinking of getting a footrest to elevate my feet about 5" off the ground but I fear I may be settling for a less-than-ideal chair/size. Also, the seat-bottom seems to be too short (front to back). My wife tried the chair and had the same criticism. I read a post that it could take weeks to get used to the chair (particularly since I've been sitting in an inferior chair for years), could this be the case for me? I know there's no way to really tell, but I would want to return the chair if this discomfort doesn't improve over the next 2 weeks or so for a different size (C maybe?) or perhaps a different chair. It's not uncommon for me to spend 2-4 hrs. in front of the computer (with breaks of course) so it's very important for me to get this chair thing right.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.
Robert Radics
Aerons.com: The chair size seems correct and would be ideal if your work surface was in the typical range of 29-30 inches. The fact that your chair is raised up to help you reached the higher work surface is what is putting the strain on the back of your thigh. The footrest is actually the ergominically correct way to solve this issue. But, try this first... Take a thick phone book or something equivelant to 3-5 inches and put it on the floor as a footrest. See if this helps, if it does you can invest in a proper footrest. A proper footrest promotes leg movement while seated.
2009-02-11 - I have HERMAN MILLER chair at my office. I believe it is AERON. Looking for exact model to purchase for my home also. I could not able to find the model of the chair. It has AE123AWB BK 420643 101 N2G1BBWP 3D02. Please advise.
Madhava Mareddy
Aerons.com: Your chair is a Highly Adjustable Aeron size B with standard carpet casters. There is no lumbar support upgrade and the color is Lead Pellicle.
2009-02-06 - Is it normal for the pneumatic cylinder of the aeron to depress about 1/2 inch upon sitting and then rise back up when I get off the chair, or does that indicate impending failure of the cylinder? Thanks.
dave
Aerons.com: This approximate 1/2 inch drop is normal for most if not all pnematic cylinders. It is more noticable with the Aeron chair since you sit in the chair and not merely on it.
2009-02-04 - I have been trying to raise the seat level on my chair but it doesn't move. I watched the video but the lever is not in the same place as shown on the video. On the right I have the "winged" knob that turns and in front of it there is a lever. How do I raise the seat?
Martha
Aerons.com: Can you post a photo? We are unclear about your lever configuration.
2009-02-04 - I purchased an Aeron chair about 4 years ago from a company called Luxurychair.com. I've since learned from my experience and that of others that they were not a reputable company. However, I'm stuck with a chair that I paid over $600 for that needs repair. The leather arm rests have cracked and ripped where you rest your elbows. I'd like to purchase replacements. Any suggestions?
KBeat
2009-02-04 - Following up...
I called your 888 number and spoke to a rep who directed me to ChairMD.com. They could not have been more helpful. Thanks!
KBeat
Aerons.com: We are sorry to hear that you were one of the many people to have a bad experience with www.LuxuryChair.com. They are a big reason why we encourage people to only acquire chairs through Authorized Herman Miller retailers. We are happy to hear though that you were able to be helped by www.ChairMD.com, we have only received high praise about them.
2009-01-30 - I recently purchased a used 2nd hand Aeron Chair Basic. I was interested in putting in the tilt limiter and forward tilt option to it on the left side manually. Is it possible to do this and how much would the parts be to add the option. I noticed that my basic chair has two slits on the left side where the tilt limiter knobs would be if I had that option. Thanks in advance!
John B.
Aerons.com: It is possible to convert a Basic Aeron to Highly Adjustable. The cost of the parts depends on the retailer or dealer you obtain them from. The change is extremely difficult so we would recommend that you have all the proper tools and are very comfortable and clear with the instructions on how to make the change.
2009-01-29 - Does anybody know where I can find some aeron chair parts, mainly the seat?
ken gibson
Aerons.com: We recommend purchasing parts for the Aeron Chair through the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com Repair Center. They can be reached at 888-677-1600.
2009-01-27 - I received a used Aeron chair for Christmas from my wife...extremely thoughtful but it turns out the chair seat wasn't in great condition. The seat bolt was epoxied into the bolt hole of the seat pan, and broke. Seller is unwilling to fix or accept return.
It appears that the bolt threads into an anchor that rests in the side of the seat pan to hold it in place. Is that correct? If so, could I simply order a new bolt and anchor and repair it? I know there are repair services but if its a simple job...
Chris from Toron
Aerons.com: Unfortunately it is not quite as simple as it sounds. The screw recepticle should not be able to move or be removed from the seat. A new seat will need to be purchased. Being the chair is used and no longer covered under the manufacturer warranty you could do this repair yourself. New seats run in the ball park of $250 and can be obtained from www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. If you call and ask they can explain everything you need to do to replace the seat and the tools required.
2009-01-21 - Dear Aerons.com
Thanks for your recommendation for me to switch from C to B. It's made a big difference. Now I really like my Aeron. I was generally pleased with officedesigns. I would recommend to ask specifically for Randy because he's very helpful and responsive.
Mr. Fastidious
2009-01-20 - The Aeron chair is exceptional, as was expected, and the online ordering and delivery from www.OfficeDesigns.com were both flawlessly executed.
Mark T.
2009-01-19 - Where can I see Aeron chairs in my area, zip code 22192?
victor van winkl
Aerons.com: Here is a link to the Herman Miller retailer finder: http://hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Locator/1,1824,a10-c501,00.html
2009-01-17 - I got a used aeron chair from someone with the a crack in the seat frame. A dealer has quoted $270 for a new seat frame. The seat frame and back is made of 60-percent recycled material (recycled plastic bottles). I would like to try and fix it myself, but I can't find anything that will work. Any suggestions?
Jermaine
Aerons.com: We have looked into this, and there is no safe way to glue or repair a broken seat. There is too much weight and pressure in the seat area for the bond to hold. New seats, however, have carbon fiber added to them to make the seats stronger and less likely to break.
2009-01-17 - I have just come into possession of a used aeron chair. The seat height seems stuck in the lowest position. Sitting in the chair, I reach down to the right and lift that lever and stand up to take my weight off the seat, but it doesn't move at all, and I can't lower it either. Is there an easy way to get it working?
Daniel Brockman
Aerons.com: It sounds like the cylinder needs to be replaced. You can find replacment cylinder kits ranging in price from $99-$150. The high side would include two specialty tools that make the replacement easier.
2009-01-16 - Hi. This may not be the best place to ask this but I'll try anyway.
I'm sending my Mirra chair to a family member, but have no idea how to dismantle it. It seems more difficult to do than dismantling the Aeron chair. Any advice?
Thanks!

Aerons.com: At the bottom of the back there is a arch shaped cover panel. Pull on the bottom lip of this panel to remove it. This action will reveal two 13mm bolts, remove these bolts and the back comes off.
2009-01-15 - I'm ready to to replace my stationary office chair with my husband's Aeron B (he's got a C). My work floor is hardwood, while his is carpet. His chair randomly rolls on my old, uneven hardwood floor. I'm guessing it has carpet casters? What is the best type of caster/glider to put on my this chair now? My work area is a built-in so moving to flatland is not an option. Thanks
Carolyn
Aerons.com: We recommend a caster Herman Miller offers that is named C9. This is a locking caster, that unlocks while you are sitting in your chair and locks automatically when you stand up.
2009-01-13 - I just bought an Aeron size A chair, and so far I love it! I have a 250 lbs. friend who uses my computer for a few hours every week. Aside from it probably being uncomfortable for him, could he damage my chair by using it? Would it be advisable to have him use a different chair?
Thanks.
Mara
Aerons.com: It is possible that he could cause damage to the chair. For example, uf he is tilting back in it or using the tilt limiter without the tension all the way up. Just use caution, and teach your friend how the chair works.
2009-01-10 - MY CHAIR FLOPS ALL THE WAY BACK AND WILL NOT HOLD THE SEAT UPRIGHT. IS THERE A WAY TO FIX IT
TOM
Aerons.com: Unfortunately it sounds like the tilt mechanism blew out on your chair. If your chair is under warranty you can get it fixed for free, otherwise you will have to purchase a new chair.
1. If your chair is under warranty, you need the tilt machanism replaced, it blew out on you.
2009-01-09 - I have a size C Aeron chair that I need to replace the mesh panels in both the back rest and the seat. Both mesh panels are removable via screws from the backrest and seat frames. Yet, HM won't sell me only the mesh panels to replace them and insist that I buy the entire backrest and seat and considerable cost. How can I get just the mesh panels to replace them myself?
Tom
Aerons.com: Unfortunately you can not. The mesh inserts are stretched by machine into the frames with so much pressure it can only be done my machine. Trying to do this without the machine creates bumps and makes the Pellicle mesh uneven. Is your chair under warranty? Seats and backs can be serviced at no charge if your chair has a valid warranty.
2009-01-02 - Trying to find out where these chairs are manufactured.
Roberta
Aerons.com: All Herman Miller chairs are made in Holland, MI; approximately 20 miles east of Grand Rapids.
2008-12-25 - We bought our chair in the USA and no live in India. The seat has broken. They are quoting us 700 USD to replace it. What is the going price for a new seat pan? (we have 3 dots--assuming it is a C size)? And does anyone have a spare one wanting to sell--needed to shipped to new york only. Thank you all so much!
jalan Alexandra
Aerons.com: Well if you just want it sent to New York, call www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com (888-677-1600). Their parts and service center can ship the seat to NY at a much lower price than $700 USD.
2008-12-20 - I'm only 5'9 medium build but opted for the roomier size C. It's not causing me any problems or showing signs of being the wrong size. My chief dissatisfaction is that it's not as comfortable and perfectly conforming to my lower back as I had hoped. My suspicion is that because I'm right at the border between B & C - both will have +/- whereas for the 6'4" people there's only one clear choice. I know there's subjectivity in where to measure but my lumbar curve centers at 8.7" which is also the same range that the size C lumbar curve centers to more or less. This ambiguity in choosing the right size should not exist especially for average range people like me.
Is it possible that I'm not understanding the effect that the Aeron is having? Conventionally with previous chairs, the lumbar groove in my back was directly supported by some soft foam. If I understand the posture fit correctly, it's not supposed to do that. It's supposed to stabilize the pelvis which itself forces the lumbar to maintain an appropriate posture. Hence, the lumbar isn't getting an direct support and perhaps this is what I perceive as not a perfect fit. I was hoping to give my lumbar some direct pampering.
I suppose I'll visit the store again and give size B another 30 minute to see if it conforms to my back better. I know that B is slightly smaller but I don't see any clear difference in measurement with regards to where the lumbar curve centers between B & C. I have not actually measured it though but some vendors say both are 8.5" whereas some say B is 8" and C is 9". My goal is to make sure I have the optimal size for my back even if means giving up the extra breathing space size C offers. I suspect it's either me on the border of sizes or simply the Aeron is not as comfortable as I had hoped. Normally I wouldn't be so number gritty with something as subjective as comfort but I don't have the ability to sit BOTH sizes for many months. I can only do one and C it is. 30 minutes is hardly much time to judge a chair as precisely as it should be done given the money spent.
Could you give me any feedback especially with regards to what I should expect of the PostureFit to do for my back? Is there any advantage to replacing the Posute Fit with the lumbar bar? Thanks so much.
Mr. Fastidious
Aerons.com: OK, First things first; a new chair is going to feel different from your old one. Second, Aeron feels different from every other chair on the market. Third, PostureFit is a lower back support.
Now let us dig a little deeper into these good questions...
1. Your body has something called muscle memory. When you sit in a new chair, your body will either love it or hate it depending on how much your new chair is like your old one. At 5 feet 9 inches you should be in a size B. It is not just about the lumbar height, it is also about the seat depth, back height ratio, adjustable range of the chair, and width.
2. Aeron works differently to support your body; its designers looked at lower back problems and used over 1000 test subjects from both military and civilian life to study the effects of supports for different areas of the body and their effects on other parts.
What they found was that a properly supported body - in the seat, upper back, and width - is relieved of pressure. The 3 different Aeron sizes are all different to support different size people properly.
3. If you want aggressive pressure in your lower back to treat the symptom of lower back pain, get the standard Aeron lumbar pillow. If you want to further treat the cause, get a PostureFit; PostureFit works with small degrees of pressure to keep your pelvis from rotating back and naturally keeping your spine alligned in a subtile S bend, which is recommend for good posture.
Niether will keep you from slouching, only you can do that.
With any new chair, we recommend that you give it some time for your body to get used to the new type of support. It can take as much as 2-3 weeks for your body to get used to it, it did for me. Now I love it!
2008-12-20 - By the way, to clarify, before making my purchase, I did spend some time trying out in person both size B & C. I chose the C because I felt crowded in B. The greater seat depth of C didn't cause problems for the back of my knees. I'd probably rank my build as 65 percentile among men - slightly higher than medium. Like I said, I'll give B another go.
Mr. Fastidious
2008-12-16 - My husband is very pleased with his Aeron desk chair from www.OfficeDesigns.com. He loves that he can customize the fit for himself, especially since he often is on the computer for a few hours at a time.
Dawn M.
2008-12-15 - I was thinking of buying a used aeron chair from someone locally but I am trying to determine whether it is authentic. Everything looks real but the logo on the back of the seat is all lowercase but the logo on an authentic chair we already have is different -- the first letters (H and M) are uppercase. Was there a logo change at some point?
kmh
Aerons.com: Herman Miller did restyle their logo a few years back to the current design.
2008-12-15 - I need a replacement seat for a c model aeron. Can you tell me the part number
tim grant
Aerons.com: The part number for the seat has a color code associated to it that coordinates with the style chair you own. We recommend you call the parts and service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com; they have fair prices and can get you the information you need.
2008-12-15 - I am having an issues with the chair, the hip pivot screw has come apart from the chair base/seat pan, it will not stay put after trying to place the screw back in its place. Should I buy a new seat base? If so, where can I get that part? thanks....
mpl
Aerons.com: If your chair is under warranty, you will not have to buy the part. We recommend that you contact the parts and service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. They can get you the parts you need and determine if they can be acquired under the terms of your warranty.
2008-12-12 - Do certified pre-owned Herman Miller Aeron chairs come with the 12 year warranty...or any part of the warranty? Do certified pre-owned Aeron chairs come with the 'born date' stamp on them?
Colleen Wick
Aerons.com: We checked out this site before we let them advertise here. They are a division of www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com, whose reputation we have known to be one of the best for years. You may have seen in the blog that we refer people to their parts and service department quite often. The chairs that www.PreOwnedAerons.com sells come with their own 12 year store warranty that is backed by www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. www.PreOwnedAerons.com chairs do not come with a date stamp, instead the warranty goes 12 years from the date of sale. Also, every chair they sell goes through a multiple point inspection to clean up the chair and ensures that your chair will function properly for years to come. They use only factory parts and factory trained technicians to work on these chairs. All things considered they are the safest, most economical way to get used or preowned chairs.
2008-12-11 - How do I fix the squeaking with the Mirra chair?
meg
Aerons.com: From what we have read and after speaking to some people, Mirra chair squeaks can be complicated and could be due to a wide range of issues. We suggest you call the parts and service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com.
2008-12-10 - I have an Aeron chair with one wobbly arm and am wondering how hard/easy it is to repair.
Liz
Aerons.com: Depending on the style of arm this can be quite an easy repair, or you may need additional parts. I would play it safe and call the parts and service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. They can walk you through fixing your arm or determine if extra parts are required.
2008-12-08 - we have a chair that does not appear to have the born-on date sticker but on the back it has three circles with arrows and numbers that would appear to be a date on which it was manufactured. Is that what the three circles are?
kim
Aerons.com: Unfortunately, the date on the back of the chair is the date the back frame was molded; not the final assembly or born on date that is needed for warranty work.
2008-12-02 - I have a C size Aeron Chair. I am 6'-8" and weigh 280 lbs. I have had a lot of lower back pain. I often find myself sliding out of the seat to a slouching position (or pushed out by the lumbar support). Is there an adjustment that can better keep my back against the seat and straight? I have the small side of the lumbar support against my lumbar. When I completely remove the lumbar support there is simply not enough back support. Would the posture fit attachment help with this sliding problem or cause the same problem? Please take time to respond. Thank You.
Steven
Aerons.com: There are only a few chairs on the market to help people who slouch. For slouching issues with an Aeron chair, I would start with the way you have the chair seat height adjusted. You should try to get your thighs parallel to the floor. The PostureFit Support upgrade will not keep you from slouching, it adds a different type of lower back support than the lumbar pillow.
2008-12-01 - After being gifted a broken Aeron from my employer I ordered replacement seat pans in both Size B and Size C before realizing the chair was an A. I gave up on restoring the chair and sold it. Now, I'm left with one brand new seat pan and I'm having a hard time determining the size of the pan I'm left with. Are there any measurements (mounting bolt to mounting bolt) or identifying codes I can find on the pan to determine the size?
Thanks! Tom
Tom
Aerons.com: Aeron seat widths are as follows: A- 19 inches, B- 20-1/4 inches, C 21-5/8 inches. These measurements reflect the width from bolt mounting to bolt mounting.
2008-11-30 - Hi,
I live in the south of France and I bought an Aeron chair from an authorised retailer here. But I find no born on sticker on it.
Referring to the photograph on this website, I wonder whether the part where the sticker should be is not missing (the part under the sticker is very dark on your photograph, so I'm not sure. On my chair plastick end where the sticker should be and you can see the metal cover of the tilt).
Since the dealer was on holiday, I contacted Hermann Miller France in Paris, I had the director who seemed worried whith the desciption I made of the chair.
Then I had the dealer and sent him a photograph of the part under the seatpan of my chair. He said everything was normal, he said the invoice is a proof for the warranty. But I still wonder how can it work if there is no identity number neither on the chair nor on the invoice...
Can somebody help me ? Can I send you the photograph of my chair to be sure if it's OK or not ?
Thank you,
Nadine
Nadine
Aerons.com: Herman Miller France is correct. Under certain circumstances Herman Miller will accept a receipt of purchase in lieu of the actualy warranty sticker on the chair. The receipt must be from an Authorized Herman Miller dealer or retailer, and your name must appear on the receipt, so make sure to keep it in a safe place.
2008-11-30 - I have a B that has stopped tilting. Any easy adjustments?
Thom
Aerons.com: Some quick adjustments you can try are to decrease the tilt tension and push down on the tilt limiter lever on the left side of the chair. If this does not work you should take it into a Certified Herman Miller Repair Center. We recommend the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com Parts and Service Department (888-677-1600).
2008-11-17 - I have an old Aeron chair that needs repair. Inside the base is a small plastic ring with ball bearings allowing the chair to swivel freely. The plastic ring has broken. The immediate effect is that the long bolt that descends from the chair into the base now protrudes all the way to the floor, causing scratches with any movement (so I can't use the chair).
This is a small part that I could replace myself - if I can figure out where to get a replacement.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!
Brady Johnson
Aerons.com: It may seem like a small part, but it is much more complicated than that. When the bearing set breaks, the cylinder falls directly down into the cylinder cup, ususually resulting in cylinder failure. The long bolt is actually the pneumatic plunger. Call the parts and service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com (888-677-1600), they can set it up to have your chair repaired. If your chair is under warranty all of their services are free.
2008-11-15 - I have an office full of Mira chairs. The seats stain very easily. Is there any way to clen them? Do any commercial cleaning companies do this?
Jon
Aerons.com: The seats for Mirra chairs are basically the same as an Aeron. Warm water with a mild detergent cleans almost everything off.
2008-11-10 - Hi
I'm sending my Aeron chair to a family member, but have no idea how to dismantle it! I called Herman Miller and they said they cant advise anything as the public arent supposed to be dismantling the product themself due to the gas in the base.. Which isnt helpful.. Does anyone know how I can take this thing apart?!
Thanks
Danielle
Danielle Roberts
Aerons.com: All you need to do is take the back off and nothing more. Turn the chair around so you are facing the back. Remove the four 5mm screws that you see on the vertical posts. Once those are removed the back will pull off. Lower the chair height all the way down. This compact chair size will fit in a 25x25x25 inch box that can be obtained at any shipping store.
2008-11-09 - I have an Aeron in great condition, except that the seat pivots up and down 'ever so slightly' and makes a metal 'clanging' noise. Its basically the bolts underneath being too loose. But, try as I might, I cant tighten them, and don't want to strip them, or make things worse. The problem is more of an annoyance than one of performance, but I want to know if this can get worse over time, and if so, how could I tighten the bolts (should be ber-simple) without getting it pro-repaired? - Thanks.
Dom
Aerons.com: Unfortunately it is not as simple as one might think. The clanging noise you hear is normal and does not affect the performance of the chair. We have on occasion seen professional technicians add washers to areas to eliminate some noise. As for the bolts on the Aeron chair; they are all set to specific torq tensions. This is one of the many reasons why we highly recommend letting a trained professional work on your chair. If you torq a bolt too much you can snap a weld, if you do not torq it enough and pieces can fall off, jam, or break. To sum up, if you take the time to have it repaired by trained people (usually at no cost due to the extensive warranty), in the end you will be glad you did.
2008-11-07 - I have a 6 month old Aeron which makes a creaking sound when gently rocking. When this occurs I feel a bit of friction in the movement versus a smooth motion. The support arms that go from the back of the seat bottom to the enclosed case below the seat are both loose when I'm not seated in the chair. Not sure if these should be tightened or if some area requires lubrication. I've changed chair adjustments and this hasn't helped. Otherwise a great chair. Please advise. Thank you.
Phil
2008-11-07 - www.UltimateBackStore.com provided an effortless transaction for my Aeron Chair purchase, and the ending result was great. I would definitely recommend them to others.
John C.
2008-11-06 - www.OfficeDesigns.com has one of the best online buying experiences. From order to delivery they rocked. The customer care specialist who helped me order the chair was very knowledgable, knew the best options, helped me decide on the right size Herman Miller Aeron chair and saved me money and time. The chair was delivered when promised and in great AAAA shape.
John F.
2008-11-05 - I work in an office and they gave me an Aeron chair. My problem is that the tilt tension seems stuck in the loosest setting. I believe the tension is set to its loosest setting but when I attempt to tighten the tension the knob (located on the right side) doesn't seem to work properly. It almost seems to be stripped. I hear a clicking sound when I try to loosen it more or tighten it. Is there an easy fix that will help me resolve this problem?
Thanks,
Jared
Jared
Aerons.com: Unfortunately there is no easy fix, but before we go down that road let us explain something about the tilt tension. This adjustment on an Aeron chair is the most important; it allows the chair to interact more with your body. The knob itself has 170 revolutions of
adjustment; this allows you to fine tune the resistance the chair offers to your body weight. Most often when people think this
adjustment is broken it is because they are not turning the knob enough to feel a difference. We always recommend at least 15 turns to feel a difference. If after 30 revolutions there is not a dramatic difference in the tilt resistance, the chair then needs to be looked at. The problem could be a number of things, they are complicated and some can be potentially dangerous to fix. www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com has a parts and service department that is authorized by Herman Miller to repair all seating lines. I would give them a call, and remember the chair could still be under the 12-year parts and labor warranty, so the repair may be free.
2008-11-01 - Can the fixed arm rests be upgraded to an adjustable?
KC
Aerons.com: Yes, the arms can be upgraded. Depending on the year of chair you may just need a couple parts or complete arm assemblies.
The parts and service center at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com can assist you with this.
2008-11-01 - I have a 2002 Aeron - love it! However, the seat base has cracked and I cannot use the chair. Is this covered under the 12-year warranty?
Cliff
Aerons.com: Yes, the seat base is covered under warranty through an authorized Herman Miller service center. www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com has a service center that we recommend using.
2008-10-31 - I had to put rubber casters on all my aeron chairs (5) and they worked perfectly on my new hardwood floors. Now I moved all the chairs to my new studio, which has carpet, and the middle post drags on the carpet. Can I adjust the height of the post? Or should I extend the shaft on the castors?
Helen T.
Aerons.com: Neither. You should invest in 3 inch deep carpet casters. This will lift the chair up by 1/2 an inch without making the chair unstable. You can obtain these from any of our recommended retailers, and they are very easy to put on.
2008-10-27 - I just had an L4-L5 fusion and a discectomy and am thinking of buying an Aeron chair. My profession requires that I sit for several hours straight with only 5 or so mins. for a break. I am hoping an Aeron chair would help relieve some of the back strain from this situation.
I have not tried any of these chairs as there seem to be no dealers in my area so I don''t even know how to proceed. Thanks for any inputE
Sharon S.
Aerons.com: We suggest you visit one of our recommended retailers. www.OfficeDesigns.com offers a 10 year return policy, you can try the chair at your office and have the ability to return or exchange the chair if it is not the right fit. They also have adjustment videos on their site, and their product specialists are always willing to walk people through adjusting their chairs over the phone. All three of our recommended retailers also offer free shipping on Aeron Chair purchases so you do not have to worry about finding a dealer in your area.
By the way, for your situation we would also recommend adding the PostureFit support rather than the standard lumbar if you do decide to purchase a chair.
2008-10-24 - Hi,
I would like to use my Aeron Chair at a higher work desk (surrently sitting on 2 pillows). Any way to adjust it to be taller than its current highest chair setting? Is it possible to add a stool base?
Sandy
Aerons.com: Unfortunately an Aeron task chair cannot be retro-fitted into a drafting chair without voiding the 12 year warranty. There is an Aeron Drafting Stool that is available through any of our recommended retailers. You could also look into a height adjustable keyboard tray system that includes a mouse tray. Some of these keyboard systems are also offered by our recommended retailers. They are easy to install and add a lot of flexibility to the work environment.
2008-10-19 - Can you add Foward tilt to a chair that doesn't have it?
Stuart
Aerons.com: The forward tilt can be added, but the process is difficult and we do not recommend doing it on your own. This is something best left to a licensed chair technician. Contact the parts and service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com.
2008-10-15 - Hello, Where can I get aeron in South Korea.
And where can I get it repaired in Korea when needed.
Also will 12 year warranty be affective here.
Stanley
Aerons.com: Here again is the link to the Herman Miller global dealer locator: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Worldwide/1,,00.html. As for the repair and warranty, some global dealers offer repair services; it is best to ask your dealer when you purchase. The chairs will have the same 12 year 3 shift warranty.
2008-10-15 - Is there any head rest for aeron.
Any product from Herman Miller?
If none, is there any head-rest which is none official.
If there is which would be two best options.
Stanley
Aerons.com: Herman Miller has looked into creating a headrest for the Aeron chair. Their testing shows adding a headrest to an Aeron negatively affects the ergonomic ability of the rest of the chair. To our knowledge no one has created a headrest on the secondary market to date.
2008-10-15 - In matter of comfotabilty, Which fabric is the best. Classic?, Tuxedo?, Wave?
Please let me know what was Herman Millers' attempt of developing each fabric when they were developing.
Stanley
Aerons.com: The overall attempt by Herman Miller was to offer 11 new colors and new weave styles to enhance the previous color palette for both office dwellers and residential users. From market research they found that the design industry was interested in new weave styles to soften the look of the Aeron chair. Some thought that the classic or standard vertical striping of Pellicle was too industrial.
Wave and Tuxedo uses the same back thread and textile composition as the classic and is covered under the same 12 year Herman Miller warranty against defects or performance issues.
Speaking on comfortability: Herman Miller says there is no difference in tightness or the overall structural capabilities for any of the three Pellicle styles. In our own personal opinion... the Wave and Tuxedo seem to give a little more and feel more comfortable.
Given the fact that the fabric is covered by the 12 year warranty, your safe to pick the color and weave that work best for you.
2008-10-14 - Hi Where can I find the Aeron chairs in Israel ?
Thank you.
Rony
Aerons.com: Here is a link to the Herman Miller global dealer locator: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Worldwide/1,,00.html
2008-10-13 - tell me should i buy y daughter a aeron chair she is in univesity
cal
Aerons.com: Absolutely! The Aeron chair is a great item for all students. Some of the benefits of Aeron are adjustability and durability. With the 12 year parts and labor warranty your daughter is sure to have a great chair for years beyond graduation as she starts her career.
2008-10-10 - My purchase experience with www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com was great. If I ever buy another Aeron I'll definitely use them again!
John W.
2008-10-10 - There is a little burn hole on the mesh seat of my aeron chair. Is there any way that I can repair it?
Thanks.
emilio k.
Aerons.com: Unfortunately the mesh itself can not be repaired from a burn. You can buy a new seat, they are available at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. Call the parts and service center (888-677-1600) for a quote.
2008-10-09 - How do you clean paint (from bumping into a drawer when turning) off of the sides of the chair? The drawer was white and chair is graphite grey. I am worried that I'll remove the chair color when cleaning(?). Thanks.
Dana Wesson
Aerons.com: For removing stains from the powder coated surfaces we have had a lot of success with Goo Gone. Sometimes though you actually need touch-up paint. You can get the paint from the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts and service department. Their phone number is 888-677-1600.
2008-10-04 - I have a Mira chair with torn seat cloth. The tear is too big to patch. Can anybody provide a rough estimate of the repair costs? Rough is fine, I'm not looking for an official quote. Thanks
Keith Scruggs
Aerons.com: Without talking directly to you it is difficult to provide an accurate quote. We recommend contacting the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts and service center at 888-677-1600.
They can get you a price estimate and even see if it can be done under warranty so there would be no cost to you.
2008-09-28 - I need a warm seat and back cover for my Aeron size B for cold weather. The mesh allows drafts to come through and my back seizes up.
Chris
Aerons.com: Herman Miller makes a seat cover for the Aeron, but not a back cover. The seat covers can be obtained through the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts and service center (888-677-1600).
2008-09-28 - The five casters on my 10 year-old Aeron chair need to be replaced. The outer plastic layer has peeled off on all five wheels. How do remove them and put on the new ones? Where do I find instructions about this? Thanks.
Dave
Aerons.com: Aeron casters just pull out. Put the chair on its back and give a really hard yank on the caster. Sometimes you might need to use pliers and a towel. Wrap the towel around the leg of the chair. Using the pliers grab the caster by the metal shaft that attaches it to the chair. Pry the caster off against the towel wrapped leg (the towel will prevent scratches in the finish).
2008-09-26 - Hi, i have had my Aeron chair for 6 years now and generally like it but there is one tilt mechanism that has simply never worked. I didn't take it back to the store because it was too cumbersome and I had a back issue at the time. Basically, I need someone to make the backrest stiffer for me so I can sit more upright. I think that will help me wiht my tennis elbow as well. Is there a place that you know of that would do that sort of thing in NY?
Kirsten
Aerons.com: Common question... easy adjustment. On the right side of your chair (as you are sitting) there is a knob with directional arrows. Turn the knob forward to add tension backward to remove tension. But here is the trick and part of what makes Aeron unique: That knob has 175 full rotations of adjustability. If you only turn it once or twice you will not feel a difference in the tension adjustment. We recommend turning it a minimum of 15 turns. If it feels too stiff, turn it backward to loosen.
2008-09-25 - Hey, I have a Mirra chair and I'm trying to remove one of the arm rests, but it seems like you need a special kind of star shaped allen wrench to turn the screw. How do I go about obtaining this tool and/or taking the arm rest off without it? I this tool proprietary to Herman Miller chairs? Thanks!
Mike
Aerons.com: I made a couple calls for you and found out that it is a readily available tool at any hardware store. You need a Torx T-40 to remove the seat from the arms.
2008-09-23 - I bought an Aeron size B but cannot get it assembled. I have spent 2 hours trying to get the back to fit the four holes on the base/armrests. There is no physical way I can get the back to fit. Is it possible that the company sent me a different size back? What can I do to assemble this chair or figure out if I need a new one? It arrived with the arms already attached to the base, and I can't seem to move them wide enough apart to get the back lined up with those 4 holes. Please help???!?
neal kayal
Aerons.com: It is possible they sent you a different size back. You can check the back size by feeling for the raised bumps on the top of the back rest behind the Herman Miller logo. 1 bump for A, 2 for B, and 3 for C. Then look under the chair for your warranty sticker. The size is the last character on the first line: AE113AWC (size c). If these two do not match call your dealer/ retailer and advise them.
2008-09-23 - My left arm of the Aeron Chair has come off.. essentially the screw has broken off mid-way. What is the best way to take that screw off, that is so tightly screwed on to the adjuster on the arm? Thanks
John
Aerons.com: For a repair like this we recommend using a certified repair center. You can contact the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts and service department at 888-677-1600.

2008-09-19 - My Aeron chair has a alot of dents and dings and I'd like to know how to make it look like new again. What product should I use to touch-up the my graphite colored chair?
Anna
Aerons.com: The www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com repair department offers a Herman Miller touch up paint for the graphite frame chairs. Because it is a paint and the original finish is a powder coat the texture will not match, but the color will.
2008-09-07 - I'm in Chicago and it looks like my Aeron (the kind with the wheel based arm rest knobs) has a problem with the threads on the left side of the chair. Basically the threads that sit inside the plastic of the seat have come out and won't say in so the seat won't take any weight. Secondly removing the bolt on the other side of the chair is next to impossible. What size are those bolts? My chair is from 1998
Robert Nicholson
Aerons.com: Unfortunately Herman Miller does not publish bolt sizes and required strengths. The good news is www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com is based in the Chicagoland area and can help you out. They have a fabulous parts and repair service. I recommend calling them at 888-677-1600.
2008-09-03 - I ordered my Aeron Chair from www.UltimateBackStore.com and FedEx delivered the chair the following day. Their process for getting an ordered item out the door really did its job! I appreciated it and have been recommending www.UltimateBackStore.com to everyone that admires my Aeron.
Michael C.
2008-08-29 - I just bought a pre-owned Aeron but it smells of cigarette smoke. Any advice on how to safely clean it to get the smell out? Also, it is a tradtional lumbar support model. is it easy to add on posturefit to that?
Jay
Aerons.com: We get both questions from time to time. PostureFit retro kits are easy to install and all the installation requires is a Philips screw driver and a ball point pen. To answer the question about getting any unwanted odors out of your chair we spoke with the folks at the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts and service department. They suggested wiping down the powder coated surfaces with a damp (not wet) cloth using mild detergent (such as dish soap). To clean the Pellicle fabric they recommended using a fabric freshener (such as Febreeze).
2008-08-27 - My Aeron Chair was ordered online through www.OfficeDesigns.com after web surfing provided the most significant endorsement of the site's balance and customer satisfaction. www.OfficeDesigns.com followed up on the internet order with a phone call which was also very courteous, responsive and informative. My Aeron chair was received just as advertised, on time and in excellent condition. Now I'm putting it to good use at my home office!
Mike
2008-08-27 - www.OfficeDesigns.com is a pleasure to work with. We received our Aeron Herman Miller chair three days after we placed our order online. It arrived exactly when FedEx tracking indicated it would, and in perfect condition. The chair is fantastic. We ordered from www.OfficeDesigns.com because we had been searching for an Aeron chair for about two years. The low prices and free Fedex shipping were the exact reason we placed our order with www.OfficeDesigns.com. And then, we had to order something else from www.OfficeDesigns.com, and their product specialist was able to help us immediately. We should receive our new casters within the next few days. What a joy to work with such professional sales people. We appreciate www.OfficeDesigns.coms service, quality, and pricing very much.

2008-08-15 - www.OfficeDesigns.com really has everything set up perfectly, a good reputation, good availability, shipping notifications, the best prices with generous coupon discounts (no other site has all of these things!) and my Aeron Chair was here soon after I made the purchase in perfect condition. After a few minutes of unpacking the chair from the box, I was working yet relaxing in my chair and relieving weeks of back pain that had been accumulating. My experience was so good that www.OfficeDesigns.com is at the top of my list for the next time I need to order something.

2008-08-01 - I actually don't just sit all day, my job requires that I have to get up fairly often. I find that the mesh fabric tears up the back of my pants. Does anyone make a seat cover in a smoother fabric?
Lindsay
Aerons.com: There is a seat cover available for Aeron chairs in sizes B and C. It is only available in black fabric, as to allow the Pellicle seat to still support your body properly. The www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts department does offer them; and they slip on easily.
2008-07-28 - I love my Aeron, but recently the height slips down. Is there an adjustment so it stays at the full height? Thanks
Bill
Aerons.com: This happens from time to time. The best thing to do would be to contact the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com service department at 888-677-1600. Their parts and service people can walk you though getting your chair working again.
2008-07-25 - Is anyone having "comfort" problems with the Aeron...namely, too much pressure on back of thigh, probably due to the hard plastic frame under the pellicule? Thanks
a. simmons
Aerons.com: We actually have people ask this from time to time. Either the chair is the wrong size for you, the chair is not adjusted properly, or the foam pad in the front edge of the chair is worn out. The foam pad is replaceable. Take a look at the sizing chart: http://www.officedesigns.com/info_links/OD-AE111G-Sizing.html or these adjustment videos: http://www.officedesigns.net/aeron/movies/aeron-adjustment-vids.html; hopefully they will help.
2008-07-20 - The Aeron chair was the only thing I liked about one of my jobs that I left...they are very comfortable!!
Gisela
2008-07-18 - We love, LOVE www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com! We ordered our first two Aerons from them during our second month in business, deciding we could work off makeshift desks but had to invest in good chairs to pull the 16-hour days our zero-to-60 start demanded. The process was flawless. We just ordered two more for our home offices, and had another exceptional experience. Your company represents the kind of partners who make owning our own business that much easier. Thanks for being here-we'll be back!

2008-07-17 - Does anyone know if a seat cover is available for the Aeron Executive Desk Chair? I would like a fitted seat cover, preferably leather, over the mesh seat, which I think is not as comfortable and not as easy on my suit pants as leather.
Bob
Aerons.com: There is a seat cover available for Aeron chairs in sizes B and C. It is only available in black fabric, as to allow the Pellicle seat to still support your body properly. The www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts department does offer them; and they slip on easily.
2008-07-16 - I have a mirra chair (sorry!) that came without the forward tilt mechanism. I've been quoted a price to retro fit one but Herman Miller want to charge me a fortune for an engineer to come fit it (if I don't use them I blow my warranty). Is it a simple thing to do yourself?
George Palmer
Aerons.com: We talked to some people at a Herman Miller repair center. To add the forward tilt to the Mirra chair is not easy. Mirra overall is not a very service-friendly chair. The service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com can do this work for you. I recommend calling them at 888-677-1600 for a quote. Because they are a certified repair center they will not void your warranty.
2008-07-16 - I received my Aeron chair today from www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. Once I got it unpacked, in less than 1/2 hour I had the chair fully assembled and adjusted to my liking. I'm actually sitting in it now as I am typing this note. My back feels better already!
Mark from Bellev
2008-07-11 - My Aeron casters have become clogged with hair and don't roll smoothly. Is there any way to dismantle the caster to clean it out?
Alicia
Aerons.com: I would not dismantle them, it is much easier to get a new set of casters. All three of our recommended retailers offer casters by the set for whatever type of floor the chair will be on.
2008-07-11 - I have my aeron since 1998, unfortunately it does not tilt as forward as it used to. As a matter a fact it seems as if with forward tilt it is only a horizontal position and without it leans back. What can I do myself? I live in Denmark (chair purchased in Netherlands at an official dealer) a date of birth sticker is long gone though.
Johannes
Aerons.com: Contact the dealer you bought the chair from; they may have a record of your purchase. You do need to have the tilt mechanism repaired, the malfunction could be anything from a broken sector gear to a cracked tilt.
2008-06-28 - The locking mechanism on the recline failed about a year ago. I heard something rattle around when it happened, perhaps a loose screw. Now, when I lean back I go all the way back. Is this something I can repair myself? The chair is out of warranty (purchased June 1998).
Scott
Aerons.com: Unfortunately this is not something you can repair yourself. It sounds like you broke the tilt cam. The tilt cam is what controls the tilt stops and is one of the pieces that has to be adjusted for the timing of the chair. Here is what I would do: www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com offers a trade-in program on Aeron chairs. If you get your new chair from them, they will give you money for the older or broken chair. Your new chair will have the full 12 year warranty, and all the mechanical improvements made to the chair since 1998.
2008-06-26 - how can I tell what size my chair is
Rex Ramey
Aerons.com: There are two easy ways to tell the size of an Aeron chair.
1. The manufacturing label of the chair. When you see the chair code AE113AWC, for example, the C is the chair size.
2. If you turn the chair so the back is facing you; you will see Herman Miller printed into the top of the back. Reach a finger between the frame and the Pellicle material and you should feel braille dots. 1 dot for A, 2 for B, and 3 for C.
2008-06-20 - Hello- I used to use a size A chair several years ago. At present however, my office is using other chairs and put the Aerons in storage. My Dr. recommended I get the Aeron size A back because I have such a petite frame, and issues had been developing. When I requested my previous size A Aeron, they had some in storage and gave me one. However, it seemed lopsided. It was measured with a level and from the looks of it, it looked even. When I sat in it- it tilted to the left. I see a Chiropractor who assured me the issues I am having are not due to my body being structurally off. What is happenning is that when I sit the right side hip is sitting higher than the left side. And all sorts of compensation is taking place along my spine and in my hips. This is now a chronic problem. I asked for another new chair and another was given to me, again out of our company storage. The same exact issues occur. My company finds it interesting that 2 different chairs are giving me the same problem. (however, they were both previously used chairs and were in storage.) Is there anything that would indicate that the previous wear and tear on the chair would cause it to be lopsided? Perhaps it is the webbing tension in the seat that is not even? I would like a brand new chair- but am looking for information on what could be the cause of the problems I am having. Thanks!
Nancy
Aerons.com: This is an interesting situation. It could be the Pellicle fabric; it could be something structural with the chair. We recommend this: call the service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com at 888-677-1600. They can service the chair under warranty so there are no out of pocket costs to your company. They can typically have a chair repaired and back to people in under 2 weeks. It is hard to say what could be wrong, some of it depends on how they were stored; but they can fix it.
2008-06-17 - I am very happy with the quality of my Floor Model Aeron Chair, the ordering process and the speed of the shipment. I'd definitely use www.UltimateBackStore.com again.

2008-06-12 - Hi folks,
The outer wheel covers have popped off my chair. (I was moving it in the car...not sure what happened.)
It looks like something needs to be pried off in order to fit the covers' rims back inside that metal thing.
Any suggestions?
Thanks~!
Gina
Aerons.com: Sounds like you just need new casters. All of our recommended retailers offer casters as stand alone items.
2008-06-12 - P.S. It's one just one wheel. tx
Gina
2008-06-06 - Wow! www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com was the best price for the Aeron chair I wanted. Plus they got it here in record time. Plus they followed up with a phone call just to check if everything went okay. Amazing! The people from www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com are my guys from here on.

2008-06-05 - I recently returned to office furniture service after ten years at another job. The Aeron chair was one of the first chairs I worked on and I have found it to be great from a service standpoint. Nearly everything on the chair is easily serviced or replaced if need be. Great chair, and the best warranty going. Way to go Herman Miller!

2008-06-03 - My 9 year old Aeron chair is broken. The seat has fallen to its lowest level, if I try to raise it I get a lot of resistence. When this first happened, I noticed some oil on the floor below the chair. There is no obvious damage to the chair like hoses disconnected, etc. How can I get my chair fixed?
Chris
Aerons.com: The best place we have found to get chairs fixed is www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. If your chair is under warranty they will do the repairs for free; or if it is not under warranty they are very fair with their prices. Remember that your chair does have a 12 year warranty when purchased through an Authorized Herman Miller retailer or dealer.
2008-06-01 - I tried the Aeron and it seems too low for me. I'm 6'4", 215 lbs. The flex in the Pecile seems to lose me 1" and the gas shock any where from 1/2" to 3/4".
If I take my shoes off (about 1/2") I can almost get my knees level my hips. I find it is healthier to have my knees an inch or two below my hips.
The chart says up to 6' 6" for the size C. Some how I dont think ordering 3" casters is going to give me enough seat height.
Am I missing something?
Jim
Aerons.com: There is another version of the Aeron that is produced for European seating standards. This Euro Aeron has a higher base and when coupled with the 3 inch casters can add up to 2 inches in overall seat height. All three of our recommended retailers offer these chairs.
2008-05-29 - can the padding under the front of the seat be fixed? we've had the aeron chairs for over 8 years and the only problem is the foam under the front of the seat is wearing out.
tom
Aerons.com: Yes, the pad under the front edge of the chair can be replaced. Call the service center at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com; they can get the part for you. Remember if your chair is under warranty the part would be free.
2008-05-28 - Where can I buy USED Aerons with warranty?
Smarkit
Aerons.com: Coincidentally, we just came across a new company called www.PreOwnedAerons.com. We checked them out and these guys are the real deal! They are part of www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com, whom we highly recommend for new chairs and service work. We ordered a chair from www.PreOwnedAerons.com and we were hard pressed to tell that the chair was used. We called them, after the fact, and found out that their service department cleans and fixes the chairs with original factory parts to ensure years of use; if something does go wrong, the chair is covered by the www.PreOwnedAerons.com 12-year warranty
2008-05-23 - We are having a problem with the chairs hittign the desks. It damages the desk and csues the wood to splitter.
Is there a company out there that sells a rubber for the aeron chair so this can not happen?
Amanda
Aerons.com: It just so happens there is. Herman Miller makes a chair appliqu; call the service center at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com, they can help you get them.
2008-05-17 - Thanks for the tip. While I had the arms in pieces I turned over the washers on the thumbwheels (they had become pretty scored on the bearing side) and put a smear of grease on the ball bearings. I also lightly greased the set screw (taking care not to get any on the friction parts). I re-assembled, tightening the setscrew until quite tight but ensuring that the arms could still be moved. Then tightened the thumbwheels. Bingo! The arms now stay put...
Chris Bower
2008-05-16 - I have a problem with the arms on my chair. No matter how much I tighten the thumbwheels, the arms still slide down. I took them apart to see what the problem was but it looks like (despite the toothed track on the frame) they just rely on friction between the plastic sliders and the frame. Is there a plastic insert with a tooth that would engage with the frame slots?
Chris Bower
Aerons.com: The thumbwheels can loosen up after time and the set screw would need to be tightened. In rare occurrences a piece in the arm may be broken. I recommend calling the service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com; if your chair is under warranty they can fix it for you free of charge, if not they can sell you the parts.
2008-05-08 - Is there a way to disassemble the fixed arms of the basic chair and place them at a higher position? If not can the adjustable arms be purchased?
Thanks.
Erich S.
Aerons.com: Adjustable arms can be purchased, just call www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com at 888-677-1600. Fixed arms can be raised by removing the back and the screw that holds the arms in. Then remove the arm spacer, re-assemble the arm hardware, adjust the arms to the desired height and tighten down. It sounds like a lot but is not too hard.
2008-05-02 - Hello and thanks for some advice. My Aeron (B) is about five years old and recently started emittting a creaking sound that I believe is coming from the point where the seat is connected to the support frame on the right side as you are seated in the chair. I tried to tighten the connection with an Allan wrench but it was already very tight and I could barely tighten it any more. I have not tried a lithium lubricant yet. The creaking sound does not seem to interfere with the operation of the chair but the sound is very annoying. I live in Las Vegas and can't locate an authorized HM repair center here. Please advise.
Joshua Abbey
Aerons.com: Your chair is squeaking because it needs to be lubed. Call the service center at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. The number is 1-888-677-1600. They have a way of helping people all over the country.
2008-05-01 - I'm very pleased with my Aeron Chair. It was easy to put together and www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com saved me several hundred dollars from the retail store price I was quoted.
Sandy C., FL
2008-04-27 - I need a replacement seat for a B Aeron chair any suggestions?
Antonster
Aerons.com: Contact www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com If the chair is under warranty they will be able to replace it at no charge. If your chair is not under warranty they will be able to get you a fair price on the new seat. Their phone number is 1-888-677-1600, just ask for their service department.
2008-04-26 - can anyone help me with repairs on my aeron chair
back mesh and pneumatic lift?
dkc911@charter.net
Dan C
Aerons.com: We recommend using www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. They have a parts and service department that is pretty hard to beat.
2008-04-23 - I am extremely pleased with the service I received from www.OfficeDesigns.com. I ordered an Aeron Chair and the support staff was very helpful when I experienced a delivery issue. I even got a follow-up call from an employee to be certain everything was handled properly. I intend to be a repeat customer as soon as the need arises.

2008-04-22 - Is there an armless version? I want to use it as a substitute for a piano bench.
Pat Fox
Aerons.com: Armless versions of the Aeron chair are available by special order through any of our recommended retailers.
2008-04-19 - I love my Aeron chair with one exception. I am extremely petite and the arm rests are too widespread. I have been going through therapy for a couple of months now to correct the trigger points that have developed in my shoulders, arms, and neck as a result of the awkward position I had been placing my arms in order to use the arm rests (my therapist's conclusion after reviewing my working environment and the onset of problems not long after purchasing the chair). I would like to remove the arm rests and use a boppy pillow (looks like a donut) to support my arms and elbows since I can then keep my arms closer to my side while typing. I purchased the chair in May, 2007 from Ultimate Backstore and have the lever type of arm rests. I can't figure out how to remove them. Thank you for any help you can provide.
Sheryl
Aerons.com: I would suggest contacting www.UltimateBackStore.com. The flipper style arms can be removed, but it is much more complicated than the old thumb wheel arms. Ask to speak with someone in their service department; they should be able to help you.
2008-04-02 - I also have a broken tilt/limiter lock with the cable end exposed. Is there any place in the Danbury, CT area to have it repaired? I have owned this since it first came out. Probably have the very orginal model (size C) and it is definitely the best office chair I've every used.
Ron
Aerons.com: If you have an original chair let me recommend this: www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com offers a trade in program, where they give you money for your older chair towards the purchase of a new chair. Doing this you would be able to get the newest technology the current Aeron chair has to offer and start on a new 12 year warranty. If you would rather go the route of having the chair fixed www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com can do this too, or follow this link to Herman Millers dealer locator: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Locator/1,1824,a10-c498,00.html
2008-03-28 - I just bought an Aeron and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my entire life. I didn't buy it from ultimatebackstore.com, but I'm sure it would be even more delicious if I had.
To anyone who is considering a purchase, I highly recommend upgrading to the chrome base and tuxedo pellicle. These options are more expensive than a base model chair, but it looks incredible!
I didn't get the leather arms, because that's just not the way that I roll. (For the record, I roll on C7 casters.) I don't have anything against leather - I own a leather jacket, and leather shoes, but I just didn't like the thought of it on my Aeron arms. the plastic / vinyl / whatever that is on them currently is excellent.
And I got a size B, by the way.
P.S. I just learned this secret Aeron Tip - engage the forward tilt, and then lock the tilt limiter when the chair is forward. It props you towards the desk, and it's a good "get some work done" position.
Bob
2008-03-28 - P.S. I see the chair I bought is called the "Executive" Aeron, which is a bit misleading, since I am not an executive at any company (that I know of.) When buying an office chair, I say err on the side of buying an Aeron.
Bob
2008-03-27 - The design of www.OfficeDesigns.com is fantastic. It made purchasing my Aeron Chair very easy. I was able to search and browse for products easily. The pop up windows detailing the Aeron fabric colors/choices is very helpful, and the close up aspect lets you see the texture of the Aeron Chair fabric as well.
Dennis
2008-03-27 - I notice many people ask about chair size so I thought I would share my experience. I'm 5'10, 175 lbs so I'm right on the line of B and B/C according to the HM chart. I bought a size C and here is why. First, I was fortunate to have a dealer close by where I purchased the chair who had both a B and C to try. After 2 visits, I felt that while the B had some benefits for my size, it felt small and tight. The main problem being that the forward sides of the frame felt uncomfortable as it was hitting against the outer edge of my thighs due to the way the frame curves inward towards the front of the chair. I, like most men, tend to sit with my legs more open, thus the problem. If you tend to sit with your knees close together this won't be an issue. Also, I sit in the chair for long hours so I thought the extra width would be more comfortable over the entire day. I also noticed our blog host had recommended that if you can put 3 fingers between the chair frame and back of your knee, it indicates the correct size, which was the case for me. On the B, I could put more than a fist which our host indicates as probably being too small. Also, the Office Designs sizing chart (different than the HM chart)indicates 5'10 and above as size C or if your inseam is 30" or greater, both of which were true for me. So these are all the factors I used in my decision process and it seems to have been the right choice... Hope it helps.
Richard
2008-03-26 - Someone should come up with a generic headrest.
Jay Sooter
Aerons.com: Herman Miller has actually worked on a headrest for the Aeron chair. They were not able to have the headrest function in a way that kept with the ergonomic principals the chair was created with.
2008-03-26 - My tilt limiter/lock is not working and I can see the cord that should control it sticking out near the lever. Is there anything I can do myself? If not, is there a way to get this repaired without going through the sending it back process?
Kyle Busse
Aerons.com: It is possible to do this yourself but not advisable. I would contact the www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com Service Department and see if they can walk you through it.
2008-03-21 - I have purchased a number of Aeron chairs through www.UltimateBackStore.com and have always been very pleased with both the chairs and service provided.
John T., Idaho
2008-03-20 - Every customer service rep I spoke with at www.UltimateBackStore.com was very polite, professional and helpful in purchasing my Aeron Chair. I will definitely return for all future chair purchases.
April C.
2008-03-20 - I ordered the exact same Aeron Chair from another website. The chair came damaged and it took me 5 weeks to get it returned and to get the paperwork resolved (needless to say I didn't reorder from them). I then found www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com and the order process was smooth and timely.
John in IL
2008-03-18 - I just purchased an Aeron in size B, and I am 5'10". The posture fit is hitting my tailbone, not my spine. Is it possible to either lower the seat or raise the seat back to make the chair conform to my spine? The curve of the back is lower than the shape of my body. Thanks.
Kat
Aerons.com: Sounds like you need to get a size C. The seat and back are not able to be raised or lowered, this is effectively done with the three sizes of chair. I would contact the dealer you received the chair from about an exchange.
2008-03-18 - My boss has an Aeron chair. Recently, his lumbar support "thing" broke (It has been almost 10 years). I would like to replace it for him, but I can't find a dealer who carries the lumbar accessory. Can you recommend a dealer that carries accessories, please?
Jennifer
Aerons.com: Our three recommended dealers all carry the accessories. I would recommend calling HomeOfficeSolutions.com, they have a complete parts and service department that can help with any matter; last time I checked they did have the lumbar supports in stock. They can also check to see if it can be replaced under warranty.
2008-03-17 - I'm about to make my order on an Aeron C, but I wasn't sure whether to get the lumbar or the posturefit thing. I've tried tested both of the features on different chairs and didn't wasn't blown away by one over the other (granted I only tried the posturefit for about five minutes). I like the simplicity of the lumbar (the posturefit just looks like more moving parts that could break), so what I want to ask you is whether there is some good reason why I should order the posturefit instead of the lumbar? Thanks.
Mike T
Aerons.com: We have found that over an extended period of time the PostureFit offers better support. It is designed to keep your sitting posture correct more naturally by keeping your pelvis from rotating back and filling the sacral void; in doing so keeping your spine in a natural S shape. The lumbar pillow just pushes against your spine forcing it into the S shape. I know the PostureFit costs a little more, but in the long term it is well worth it.
2008-03-17 - Is it normal for the Aeron to sit at a slight recline when you don't have the forward tilt lever engaged? It seems like I have to always sit with forward tilt on, otherwise it seems like the chair is in a locked recline position and I have to essentially lean forward when I'm typing.
Shane
Aerons.com: When the Aeron chair is in the neutral tilt position there is play in the tilt that makes it feel like it is always tilting back. This is to promote movement throughout the day. Many people will leave the forward tilt engaged even when they are not typing and take advantage of the chairs full tilt range. To do this engage your forward tilt and turn off your tilt limiter (tilt lock) and tighten your tilt tension (knob or right side) so the chair has a light bounce to it.
2008-03-15 - What are the main differences between the Aeron size B and C chairs? I'm about 6'2", weigh 165 lbs, and have long legs. According to the charts, I can use a size B or size C chair. So I need to know the main differences between the chairs to get a better idea of which one might fit be best.
Samson
Aerons.com: The different sizes of Aeron chairs are scaled based on studies done by Herman Miller in the 1990s. The different sizes have different seat and back ratios. The first thing you should fit to is height and then fit the weight. At 6 foot 2 inches and 165 lbs, you should be a size C; you want to have as much of the seat coming in contact with your body as possible. Any person with an inseam of 30 inches or greater should be in a size C.
2008-03-14 - Have you heard of any new developments in Aerons lately? Are they going to be coming out with any new pellicle designs, finishes, or colors? Is Herman Miller planning a successor to the Aeron (something that is equally high-end, not the Mirra / Celle) I love mine, but am curious to know what's next.
Tony B.
Aerons.com: Unfortunately Herman Miller is very tight lipped about any new products or changes to product lines. I am sure they have their designers working on the next big thing; but we are going to have to wait and see.
2008-03-14 - Do you have any experience with having custom graphics or logos woven into the Pellicle material of Aeron chairs? Is this custom work achievable on the Tuxedo and Wave material? The chairs look like the mesh is spaced pretty evenly - do logos actually look good? Do you have any photos of actual chairs with this option, as opposed to mockup images?
Jay C.
Aerons.com: For a period of time Herman Miller made Aeron chairs with Classic Pellicle with different designs woven into the mesh. The most commonly seen were for the NBC anchors at the 2000 Olympic Games. Herman Miller has also made some featuring different collegiate logos. After doing some checking we found out that it may still be possible to have them done. There is a large minimum order quantity; I would recommend contacting a Herman Miller business dealer or Herman Miller directly.
2008-03-13 - I am very pleased with the whole order process and I love the Aeron Chair I received from www.UltimateBackStore.com.
Richard W.
2008-03-11 - Does anyone have experience with the Classic Pellicle fabric versus the Tuxedo. I was at a local dealer who had one of each in floor models and the Tuxedo seemed slightly more cushy to sit in than the classic. I'm wondering if this was just because the Tuxedo chair was an older floor model. Do they have a break-in period where they get softer. The sales person said the Tuxedo was thicker. Any advice? Also, I too was going through the size dilemma. The B felt good except for the side of frame hitting my thighs. I liked the extra width of the C but the extra length caused the padding that is in the front of the frame to hit under my thighs in a slightly uncomfortable way. I also noticed that padding was not on the Tuxedo model.

2008-03-06 - I am loving my Herman Miller Aeron chair from www.OfficeDesigns.com - it was exactly what I had ordered. It arrived very quickly and in excellent condition. I especially liked the FedEx delivery.
Marya T, FL
2008-03-03 - I just bought a 2nd hand Aeron from what appears to be a company that either downsized or is going out of business. They were selling quite a few of them. They all seemed to be in similar condition so I chose one, purchased it and left. When I got home, I discovered that the foam insert is deteriorating. I saw the price of a new insert plus shipping and am cringing at the almost $50 price. Also the shaft is close to touching the floor. Maybe I need the deep carpet casters. I have a chair mat which is probably too soft for the thick carpet. Chair is 6 years old. Uhhh, I read some blogs so far and just realized I committed a great boo boo by using WD-40 on the casters! Hmm, maybe I will be required to buy the bigger ones after that mistake, eh? Thanks for any help or recommendations.
Jeff S.
Aerons.com: Would you mind sharing where you purchased the chair? It is important to buy Aeron chairs from authorized retailers so that problems like this do not happen, and it may be helpful to others to know who is unauthorized. To answer your question tough, some of the Aeron chair parts can get pricey, which is another reason why we recommend getting an Aeron from an Authorized Herman Miller dealer or retailer. Remember only new chairs from authorized retailers have the Herman Miller 12 Year parts and labor warranty. Using a deep carpet caster will raise your chair up in the carpet and allow it to roll more easily.
2008-03-03 - I emailed the seller of the chair to see if they will do some sort of concession. At the very least, I would like to avoid shipping costs if there is a local dealer.
Jeff S.
2008-03-03 - I guess I should clarify that the Aeron was purchased from a company that owns these chairs, they are not a dealer. Since I have no warranty on the chair, I want to get parts for the lowest cost possible. As the parts are pricey as it is, the only thing I can do is possibly avoid shipping costs.
Jeff S.
2008-03-03 - The Aeron chair is a great product, www.OfficeDesigns.com provided super fast shipping, the web site was easy to use and had the best prices, these are all good things I like about www.OfficeDesigns.com. My chair arrived is super sturdy packaging, in perfect condition. A couple of days after I got my chair, I got a personal call from someone at www.OfficeDesigns.com, checking up to see if I got my chair and if everything was ok. Great job!! I will recommend www.OfficeDesigns.com to all my friends and family. Thanks!!
Robert N.
2008-02-29 - I love my Aeron Chair from www.UltimateBackStore.com. I only wish I had bought one sooner!
James L.
2008-02-28 - ...I've also just noticed that the cable for the "tilt forward' knob on the seat frame doesn't return with the 'knob' when pushed down, it's like the cable hasn't got a return spring to take slack out of the cable and keep the cable mated with the knob when pushed down....
DAniel McDonald
Aerons.com: This is one of the reasons we recommend purchasing from Authorized Herman Miller dealers/ retailers. It sounds like the cable is not attached, it could be broken, or missing parts to actuate the cable. I recommend calling the repair center at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com and see if they can help you, I do know you can arrange for them to fix it for you.
2008-02-28 - Love my AE123AWB ... heard a loud "snap" a couple of days ago ... thought I would take a look to see what had happened ... needed visibility into the tilt mechanism so removed the seat insert from the seat frame (don't do this!) ... found out the main shaft for the tilt limiter cam had broken ... major repair! ... chair birth date 8/22/97 (not in warranty) ... ok, let's just tighten up the back tension, reassemble and get on with life ... ooops ... have you ever tried to put the insert back in the seat frame? ... really hard ... any helpful thoughts would be much appreciated ... ?heat?. Thanks in advance
Bruce F
Aerons.com: To be honest, in my opinion this chair is not the safest thing to be sitting on right now. But the foam insert can be replaced; it just takes a lot of work to get it reinserted. I have found that the best way is to get a new insert that tends to be more rigid from lack of wear. Contact the service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com; they should be able to help you out.
2008-02-27 - I was referred to www.OfficeDesigns.com by a friend. I borrowed his Aeron Chair and tested it at my law office. I liked it and placed my order. Sitting in it everyday makes me love my Aeron even more!
Pamela P.
2008-02-27 - I've just bought and repaired a AE113, by replacing the seat and back, i purchased it second hand. it has the tilt limiter and forward tilt fitted. When it was sent, the arms where separated from the base. My issue is that when I reassembled it, the tilt forward function hardly rises up from the horizontal. Do I need to pretension the large hex shaped supports for the arms, or is there an adjustment to allow the seat to forward tilt.
Daniel McDonald
2008-02-20 - Help! I love my Aeron chair and have had it since April of 1999. The mesh seat (dark green) started to show a small tear a few months back and it is getting larger. The original leather arm rests also started to crack and rip almost a year ago. I have seen online where I can buy replacement arm pads, but what do I do about the mesh of the seat! PLease help....they are great, but expensive chairs, so I need many, many more years out of this one. Thanks for your help!
Brian
Aerons.com: Your chair should still be under warranty if it was purchased in April 1999. I would recommend calling the service department at www.HomeOfficeSolutions.com. Their repair center should be able to fix your chair.
2008-02-19 - My purchase of a floor model Aeron from www.UltimateBackStore.com was very easy. I really appreciated the status updates their customer service gave me too.
Tim
2008-02-18 - I've owned an Aeron for about seven or eight years. A metal box fell from a tall shelf onto the seat and cracked the seat frame. I've gotten a replacement seat, but I can't seem to find a hex bit that fits the seat frame mounting screw. I'm guessing it's metric, as a 5mm Allen wrench seems to fit the back mounting screws. Does anyone know what size hex bit I should get for the seat frame mounting screw?
InDC
Aerons.com: You will actually need two different size Allen wrenches: 6mm for the side bolts and 4mm for the two bolts under the seat.
2008-02-16 - I've owned an Aeron chair for 9 years now and the lumbar just broke at one end. I can't remember if I bought a size B or C chair and I need this info as I'm about to order a new PostureFit Support. Is there any marking on the chair that reveals it's size? Maybe on the Born-On sticker?
Size Matters
Aerons.com: There are two ways of telling the size of the chair: On the born on sticker the last letter of the AE1_ _ _ _ A,B,C is the size. Or if you look at the top of the back you will see Herman Miller printed into the plastic. Reach a finger between the frame and the fabric and you will feel raised dots, like brail. 1 dot-A, 2 dots-B, and 3 dots-C.
2008-02-16 - Hello! Is it possible to overtighten the tilt adjustment knob? I don't want to break my chair, but I read in this blog that some people give it up to 150 turns. How does the mechanism work? Is there any sort of safety to avoid a costly mistake?
Billy McGee
Aerons.com: The tilt tension adjustment does have a limit to the amount of turns it will spin, the nice part is that the mechanism of the chair will stop it from spinning beyond this point. The tilt tension is the finest tuning piece of the Aeron chair; it is this adjustment that allows the chair to counter-balance to the body weight of the user. There are roughly 150 complete turns of the knob to go from the extremes of the tilt mechanism. I have found that if you set the tension so the chair bounces with you it tends to work the best.
2008-02-16 - Can you please recommend an Aeron dealer in Canada? I'm looking for the lowest price possible. Thank-you / Merci!
Bob
Aerons.com: We would recommend www.GabrielRoss.com. They are very knowledgable and their service is excellent.
2008-02-15 - Thanks so much for answering my previous questions, I appreciate it! I'm nearly ready to build my chair, I just have one more question... Is the AA caster with the aluminum yoke the same as the C7 caster, but with chrome trim? Do you recommend this wheel along with the CD aluminum option? I haven't been able to find an actual photo of a chair with AA wheels online, so I wasn't sure which one to get. I'm also trying to decide between standard or tuxedo Pellicle - any suggestions on which way to go?
Ronnie
Aerons.com: The AA caster is the same as the BB caster, but with aluminum trim. Or in other words the AA caster is a standard carpet caster. The Tuxedo pellicle pattern adds nice depth and in my opinion is more visually pleasing. It has a softer look that the classic pellicle, but the same strength.
2008-02-15 - I have ordered several Aeron chairs from www.UltimateBackStore.com and have always been very pleased.
Dolores S.
2008-02-15 - Where do Aeron chairs retail in India?
Srikiran
Aerons.com: Herman Miller has a global dealer locator http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Worldwide/0,2018,c0,00.html. This is the best resource to use as it is constantly updated.
2008-02-12 - My Aeron Chair from www.OfficeDesigns.com is very comfortable. I love how adjustable it is. What a great product!
Anu, Fla.
2008-02-12 - Hello, this is a great blog and I've learned many interesting things from it! I've got a few Aeron questions for you... What is the model number for the fully chromed out Aeron? That is, the "executive" with the chrome base, as well as the chrome arms / and chrome underneath the seat? Is it the base/frame finish "CD", or is the full chrome only available in model G8 (Polished Aluminum with the graphite frame and graphite applique)
Is the applique something that any normal person should be concerned about ordering? I'm a bit confused between the difference between options G1 (Graphite) and (ZB) Graphite with Graphite Applique.
Finally, have you heard of any problems with the dual-stage extended-height pneumatic cylinder? I have heard that the chair has more sway on the dual-stage, vs. the single-stage.
Thanks!
Ronnie
Aerons.com: Sounds like you are an Aeron enthusiast yourself!
I will talk about the appliqu
2008-02-10 - How does one find an operating manual for the Aeron chair? Is there a manual one can download at any website? Thanks.
-Petra
Petra
Aerons.com: There is a manual that comes with every new Herman Miller chair. You can get a digital copy of the manual from Herman Miller here: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Product/1,1592,a10-c440-p8,00.html. All of our Recommended Authorized Dealers also have adjustment videos on their sites that you might find useful.
2008-02-07 - I ordered an Aeron chair from www.OfficeDesigns.com and the chair was perfect. I had a problem with the Posture-Fit attachment though, which seemed to be damaged/defective. I was sent a replacement in a timely fashion. Overall I was very satisfied with the experience and would not hesitate to purchase or recommend purchase from www.OfficeDesigns.com.
Larry K.
2008-02-06 - I just purchased a loaded model from ultimatebackstore.com and am wondering if it is normal that the aluminum arm rest brackets squeak. It squeaky metal on metal sound. When I adjust up or down an 1/8" or so and re-lock the lever, it goes away momentarily. Every move I make i hear this squaking and it is very annoying. Is there any thing I should do to lubricate the track or is there something wrong? Please advise. Thank you.
Kyle Larson
Aerons.com: Although this in not a common problem, it can happen during winter months in some areas. I have found that a squirt or two of silicone grease spray fixes this every time. Inside the arm casting are plastic and rubber pieces that can get dusty or they just get too dry. Spray the silicone in at the top of the arm and move it all the way up and down a couple times, this will re-lubricate the parts. DO NOT USE WD-40!! This will eat away the plastic, and remove the grease from the rest of the internal components. You can get a can of silicone grease from any hardware store. (on a side note: silicone grease is really good for interior doors, car doors, and garage doors too)
2008-02-02 - Hi, I recently bought my Aeron from ShopSeating on eBay (AKA GlobalCompany 92). I'm worried because the chair is not stable on its vertical piston. If you look closely at the point where the lower (bigger) piston fits into the casters, it seems as if the piston was a bit smaller than the cilinder it slides into, so that it floats a little bit inside it, causing the entire chair to move even more. Moreover, both the pistons (upper and lower) are visibly spread with oil. Is this normal ? I have much cheaper chairs with pneumatic lift, in my office, and all of them are perfectly stable, with no visible grease on their piston...
Antonio Leonfort
Aerons.com: Well, normally you do not visibly see the grease Herman Miller uses on the cylinder because it is clear. It also sounds like the chair has the wrong ring where it goes into the base.
This is a perfect example of why Aeron chairs should be purchased from authorized Herman Miller dealers/retailers. GlobalCompany 92 is not an Authorized Herman Miller dealer/retailer. You have a used chair; it sounds like someone added grease to it, it does not have all of its original parts, and it does not have a warranty to get the chair fixed. I would return it if possible and reinvest in a new chair with a reputable retailer.
2008-01-31 - I've ordered several Aeron chairs from www.UltimateBackStore.com and all of the transactions have been pleasant.
Dolores S., Fla.
2008-01-30 - I recently purchased a Basic Aeron Chair from www.OfficeDesigns.com. It was a pleasure doing business with them and I will be ordering again soon. It is always terrific when a company actually meets or exceeds your expectations.
Iris
2008-01-30 - What are the differences between the models of the Aeron work chair (AE111, 112, 113, 121, 122, 123)?
Eva
Aerons.com: Each number in the chair initial model sequence has significance.
AE
2008-01-28 - I love my Highly Adjustable Aeron Chair from www.UltimateBackStore.com. What a pleasure to have a chair that makes working all day a comfortable endeavor!
Steve, GA
2008-01-28 - Is the PostureFit Lumbar Support Kit and the Lumbar Pad interchangeable? In other words, can I get both and just switch between them (uninstall one and install the other when I feel like changing them). Or are they a permanent attachment for the chair?
Steve, VA
Aerons.com: The PostureFit and standard lumbar support are interchangeable. Either support is easily removed or reinstalled. If you do this with PostureFit I recommend that you only disconnect the cable from the wish-bone, and leave the cable attached to the chair. The cable remaining on the chair will not affect the performance, but it will make it easier if you want to reattach it later. The only caveat is that the lumbar support and PostureFit can not be on the chair at the same time.
2008-01-28 - This is related to the other post I just posted. What does it mean when the homepage says the PostureFit back support system should be partially attached?
Steve, VA
2008-01-21 - I was very impressed with the service during my Aeron chair purchase. OfficeDesigns.com was prompt and efficient. My husband accidentally ordered wrong casters, so I called the next day and asked the change to be made. Even though the Aeron chair was already packed and ready to go, the change was made. Very nice. I would definitely do business with OfficeDesigns.com again. Thank you!
Noora T.
2008-01-17 - I am going to purchase a new Aeron with the polished aluminum frame, but was wondering what the deal was with the optional aluminum casters? I can't seem to find any pictures showing the difference between these and the standard casters on an aluminum frame Aeron... Just wondering if they are really worth it.
G Smith
Aerons.com: The aluminum casters add a bit of the aluminum trim giving the chair a more finished look. The casters still have their black wheels, but the difference between them is the aluminum accent.
2008-01-16 - I just received 2 new Aeron stools from my Herman Miller rep and I am not able to adjust the seat or back tilt at all and the tension know just spins with no change in tension of the tilt. I use the levors for seat and back tilt per the directions but nothing. What gives are they put together incorrectly?
Lisa Pendleton
Aerons.com: I would call the dealer you bought them from and have them walk you through the chair functionality. One thing about tilt tension: there is a lot of adjustability in that knob, somewhere around 150 turns. Some people think that the tilt tension is not functioning properly since they feel no difference after 4-5 turns. Try turning it 20 times. The tilt limiter and forward tilt all work off the counter balance of the tilt tension, if the tilt tension is too high, the others will not function.
Sometimes there may be a little manufacturing dust in the chair, in which case this can also help:
Push both levers on the left side of the chair down. Stand behind the chair with 1 foot on the base, and jerk up on the back. Sometimes new chairs get stuck before their first use.
2008-01-15 - I had some questions regarding my purchase, and my call was answered promptly and professionally by the product specialists at OfficeDesigns.com. I think you have a great site for Herman Miller chairs. Before I went to you, I tried buying from the Great Indoors. Not only they failed to deliver, but they never mentioned all the available options. OfficeDesigns.com is easy to navigate, and the chair assembly is very simple.
Elena P.
2008-01-14 - Sit4less.com says that they have the exclusive on the color "true black" is this true? Is it differeant, blacker than "carbon"?
Barry K
Aerons.com: Sit4less does have an exclusive color named True Black and it is a darker black than carbon.
Herman Miller used to allow dealers to develop their own exclusive colors. Shop carefully though, because unless the colors
were originally developed by Herman Miller and brought back into production by a retailer, exclusive
colors have a shorter warranty period.
2008-01-13 - Are there any lubrication points for the Aeron? Mine has a bit of a squeak when I get up from the chair. Otherwise no squeaks.
Jeff C
Aerons.com: There are many lubrication points on the Aeron chair. Unfortunately they all require the chair being taken apart, and specific lubricants being used. I recommend calling the service department at HomeOfficeSolutions.com. These folks know their stuff and have factory trained repair staff that can help you. One important note: DO NOT USE WD-40. This is not a lubricant and will cause damage to your chair that is not covered by the warranty.
2008-01-09 - I LOVE my Aeron Chair from OfficeDesigns.com!!
Susan, MN
2008-01-07 - Great chair from HomeOfficeSolutions.com! My order arrived in time and in perfect condition.
Christine B.
2008-01-07 - I was just given a (used) Aeron chair. The center pedestal drags on the floor when I move the chair around. Is this normal?
Chris C.
Aerons.com: The center pedestal or cylinder should not be dragging on the floor. There could be two reasons for this: 1. The cylinder fell through the housing or 2. you need a taller caster to compensate for the type of flooring you have the chair on.
The first reason is easily found by tipping the chair over on its back. At the bottom of the cylinder you should see a steel rod pushing through the black steel housing. There should be a clip holding the steelrod to the bottom of the black housing. If this is missing you need to replace the cylinder.
If the clip is in place you need to simply raise the height of the chair to compensate for your flooring. This normally has to be done for deep or plush carpet. All of our recommended retailers offer 3 inch deep carpet casters. These will raise your chair up by 1/2 an inch bringing the cylinder off the floor.
2008-01-03 - We are looking for Herman Miller Aeron Chair dealers in Tampa and Orlando area. Can you email this information to us at kareng@elitesoftware.com.
We also would like to know the prices of the Aeron Chairs, item descripion Aeron C, Carbon, Aeron B, Carbon and Aeron side chair, Carbon. The item numbers AE123AWBAJG1 / BBBK3D01 and AE500AJG1SB. Thank you for your consideration to this matter.

For pricing information we recommend three Authorized Herman Miller retailers, who can deliver any where in the US: OfficeDesigns.com, HomeOfficeSolutions.com and UltimateBackStore.com. You may access these sites directly from our home page.
2007-12-26 - How do I remove the base from top part of chair to transport in my car
bob
Aerons.com: I had to do this once myself. I found it to be a lot easier to remove the back of the chair than to remove the base. The back can be removed by unscrewing the four bolts on the back. Removing the base is more complicated and can result in damage to the chair and pneumatic cylinder.
2007-12-03 - I'm trying to determine what size would be best. I'm 5'11", 168lbs. Would a size B or C be best. How much bigger is a C? Thanks.
Rich S.
Aerons.com: Herman Miller provides a standard sizing chart. Through our research we found that www.OfficeDesigns.com goes a step further and includes your inseam length in their chart. Their chart is located here: http://www.officedesigns.com/info_links/OD-HAGAeron-Sizing.html
2007-11-27 - Received my chair yesterday from UltimateBackStore.com, assembled it in 10 minutes today, and it is everything I hoped for. I received helpful assistance picking out colors, model and features, great pricing and rapid order fulfillment. What more could you ask for?
Gary B.
2007-11-21 - My C chair is 5 years old. The seat has developed a "snag-like" distortion in the webbing. Are replacement seats available? Thanks.
Andy
Aerons.com: One thing Herman Miller has done is make parts for the Aeron chair that are available through some of their retailers. HomeOfficeSolutions.com has a service department that can get you the parts you need. Also have them check, if you bought your chair from an authorized Herman Miller dealer/ retailer; a new seat could be covered under warranty.
2007-11-20 - My wife long ago--10 or 12 years ago, at least--bought an Aeron chair and has enjoyed it emensely. We have misplaced our instruction book and need to make adjustements on the chair. Is there a way to get a copy of the book, paper or as a PDF?
Thanks,
Ed
Ed Smith
Aerons.com: All of the recommended dealers on Aerons.com have adjustment videos on their Aeron Chair pages. You could also call and speak to their product specialists and they can walk you through the adjustments over the phone.
2007-11-16 - I'm happy with my chair but in the winter it is cold. Does anybody make a seat cover for the Aeron chair?
duysguys
Aerons.com: There is a little known fact that Herman Miller makes a seat cover for the Aeron Chair. Just contact the folks at OfficeDesigns.com and they can assist you with finding one that will match your chair.
2007-11-16 - I'm looking at the one of the recommended authorized dealers, and one of them is selling floor models that are inspected by Herman Miller techs and come with the full 12 year warranty. Is this legit?
Luke B.
Aerons.com: Yes, this is a legit offer. The floor model chairs are window displays that may have been scuffed in transit or use; they are not demo units and they come with a full warranty.
2007-11-14 - I'm very interested in purchasing an aeron chair, but don't know what size to get -- b or c. I weigh 145 lbs and am 5.4; my boyfriend is 5.10 and 220 lbs. I'm hoping we can find one chair that will be confortable for both of us.
jeanne
Aerons.com: Both of you would be most comfortable in the size B chair. The height range is 5 feet 2 inches to 6 feet and weight from 125 lbs to 300 lbs.
2007-11-13 - So, I've been shopping around, and am hesitant to buy because I am wanting to take the chairs to India. Is this okay? What if I have technical problems with the chair when I land? Thank you for your time.
Apukuttan Yuvraj
Aerons.com: We have not heard of anyone having a problem with taking their personal chairs out of the country.
Herman Miller has the best world wide dealer network: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Worldwide/0,2018,c353,00.html. If you encounter any problems find the nearst dealer to you, or check out the Herman Miller warranty and service section: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/PN/Category/1,1793,a10-c2071,00.html. You can also call any of our three recommended dealers or ChairMD for international service advice.
2007-11-02 - UltimateBackStore.com provided a very easy customer shopping experience. My Aeron chair order was processed quickly, arrived in a very timely manner and was in perfect condition. I would definitely return and buy more things from the store.
Jacqueline W.
2007-11-02 - I have an Aeron Chair that squeaks when you move side to side on it, where do I grease/oil and what should I use. I think its coming from near the levers on the left side of the chair (while sitting on it) but am not 100% sure.
Vinny L
Aerons.com: You will want an Authorized Herman Miller Service Technician to help you assess exactly what the cause of the squeak might be. I recommend that you contact ChairMD.com. They can typically diagnose the problem with your chair with a brief conversation. I also understand that they fix most Aeron Chairs for free.
2007-10-31 - I recently purchased a highly adjustable executive aeron chair and I noticed something about it that I was not aware of- when I sit down the entire chair (ie the piston) sinks about and inch and half. Is it supposed to do that or did I get a defective piston? I have a size C chair and weigh only about 170 lbs. Thanks.
Todd
Aerons.com: Because of the advanced ergonomic nature of the Aeron chair the cylinder is designed to sink. The chair as a whole is designed to move with the user. If you notice, when you lock the tilt it still has a slight bounce. The motion is also there to encourage you to move through out the day.
2007-10-29 - Hi, plan on buying an Aeron chair for home use. I used this chair at my previous companies more than 7 years ago. I love it; finally decided to buy it for my personal use. I want to ask if anyone can share your experience on the 12-year warranty. On paper, it looks great. But I wonder if it is really practical. I imagine it will cost couple of hundred dollars to ship the chair back for any repair work. Do you send the whole chair back assembled, or all pieces back disassembled, or disassemble the chair and only send back the damaged part? Will the chair hold up after assembly and disassembly multiple times? I am deciding whether it is worth it to buy the chair retail, buy floor models/returns (with warranty), or get it off ebay (without warranty). Thank you for sharing your experience.

Aerons.com: Fabulous question; I do not think enough people look at the 12 year warranty for what it really is. The 12 year warranty covers parts and labor for a period of 12 years from the date you purchase the chair. There are a few companies out there that do the warranty service work that do not even charge you to have your chair shipped to them for the work to be done. Here is a link to Herman Miller Warranty Centers: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/PN/Category/1,1793,a10-c2071,00.html Why ship the chair out? Work done under the Herman Miller warranty needs to be completed by factory trained professionals in order to keep your warranty valid. The factory trained professionals will often check over more of the chair than just the problem in question. Another nice part about this is that anything else they find is still covered under warranty, which means no charge to you. The service center you contact will tell you if they require the whole chair to come back or just a piece of it. All in all what I have found is that parts for Aeron chairs are expensive; pneumatic cylinders costing from $110 to $190 and seats costing around $280. If you are going to take the leap and invest in the Aeron chair, spend the extra couple of dollars and get one with the 12 year parts and labor Herman Miller warranty. These are only available from Authorized Herman Miller Retailers (we have a couple we recommend listed on the site). Some of these dealers are on eBay, and some offer floor models, but get one with the warranty. You will have peace of mind for the next 12 years that your chair will be in perfect working order
2007-10-22 - I just bought an Aeron chair from The Healthy Back Store, which is a chain in the Washington, DC area. I am 4'10'' and 115 lbs., and I bought a size B chair (the salesman told me he thought Herman Miller was no longer making the A size). However, after researching online I see that there is an A size available and that is recommended for people of my height/weight. Called the store back and the manager told me that almost nobody buys the A size, even people of my height. I can try the B and if it doesn't work they will special-order the A for me. Any thoughts from other petite women (or men) out there?
Elia
Aerons.com: Herman Miller has never discontinued a size of the Aeron chair. At your height and weight you are the exact person the size A was created for. The ratio of back height and seat depth will be much more comfortable than the size B. We highly recommend you return the size B and have them custom order the appropriate chair for you. You could also return it all together and acquire the chair from one of our recommended online dealers.
2007-10-17 - I just bought an Aeron chair from UltimateBackStore.com. The chair was at a great price and delivered fast. I am really enjoying my new product! Thanks!

2007-10-16 - I had a wonderful experience with OfficeDesigns.com. Online order was easy and my Aeron chair arrived almost immediately. As a happy customer, I'm looking forward to doing business in the future.
Brian, Fla.
2007-10-16 - I am very pleased with my Aeron chair for a number of reasons:
UltimateBackStore.com, unlike every other retailer I found on the Internet that carried the Aeron Chair replacement casters, was the only company that would sell the casters for a single chair. All others had a minimum purchase of 4 or 6 sets of casters, which is simply uneconomical for the home business owner! Congratulations to The Ultimate Back Store for watching out for the small company operators of the world!
Gerald Anderson
2007-10-16 - I find my Aeron chair from UltimateBackStore.com exceptionally comfortable, and I wish I had heard of these chairs years ago. It would have saved me so much back pain!
Sheila, CA
2007-10-16 - OfficeDesigns.com offered lots of detailed information on the site prior to purchase, which was the major reason I bought from them. The Aeron chair arrived promptly, in perfect condition and was easy to assemble. That may be normal for this chair, but the OfficeDesigns.com website was definitely a cut above the rest. Great job.
J. Leftwich
2007-10-16 - Everything went smoothly with the order and my Aeron was delivered on time. The chair was packed well for transit to Hawaii. I would definitely buy from HomeOfficeSolutions.com again.
Mark, HI
2007-10-13 - I love my Aeron. The most comfortable chair ever!!! However I use it in a recording studio and need to remove the arms so I can play a guitar or bass while sitting in it. How do I go about this?
butchwhitt@rock.com
Butch Whitt
Aerons.com: Depending on the year of the chair this can be very easy. If you have a chair with the flip lever height adjustable arms, you will need to buy new swing arms, the piece of metal that holds the seat and arms to the chair. If you have an older chair with the thumb wheel height adjusters:
1) remove the back - use a 5mm hex wrench.
2) using a T-27 torx wrench remove the screw on the inside of the arms (this screw is exposed when the back is removed).
3) Put the back on again. If you have any questions I recommend calling the experts at HomeOfficeSolutions.com.
2007-10-09 - We are very pleased with our Aeron chairs and look forward to doing business with UltimateBackStore.com again!

2007-10-09 - My Aeron is about 2 or 3 years old. I heard somethng in it go "ping" while sitting in it. Now the center steel column, that used to be about 1/8 to 1/4" above the floor scrapes the floor. Any ideas what failed? How to fix?
I live in Reston VA.
Thanks,
Mike
Mike
Aerons.com: Hey Mike, sounds like your cylinder failed. The ping noise you heard was the cylinder cartridge dropping down to the bottom of the cylinder housing, which probably broke the cylinder bearings. Now, to get it fixed; call HomeOfficeSolutions.com parts and service department, these guys are great. If you bought your chair from an Authorized Herman Miller Retailer your chair
is covered by the 12 year parts and labor warranty, it will cost you $0 to get it fixed.
2007-10-09 - Btw, the chair is still held in vertical position and the vertical is still adjustable.
Still sound like the cylinder (?) failed?
selnick@hotmail.
Aerons.com: Still sounds like it, but call the experts at HomeOfficeSolutions.com to confirm.
2007-10-09 - For information and prespective, it would be interesting to know:
1) What is roughly what service charge should a customer expect to pay (or range?) if he made the purchase from an unauthorized dealer?
2)How do I find an authorized repair shop?
3) Roughly what would the cost of the parts alone be?
4) Could a handy person who has a variety of tools do the job him/herself?
Thanks, --Mike
Mike
Aerons.com: From what I have seen pricing is pretty consistent by part. For example a new seat will range from $269 to $300 and a new cylinder will range from $160 to $200. Labor should cost around $75 per hour. Herman Miller has a couple authorized repair sites listed on their site Warranty Service Centers (http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/PN/Category/1,1793,a10-c2071,00.html), but I know that ChairMD.com will handle warranty and non-warranty work. I would also call HomeOfficeSolutions.com; they are also a certified repair center which we highly recommend.
Some items on a chair can be fixed by any individual, but believe it or not, the chairs also have a timing mechanism much like a car. If this timing is not properly set the chair will not function properly.
2007-10-02 - I have a hard time to decide which size I should use for my Aeron. I am 5.11 and weigh about 160lbs. So I fall into the B/C grey area.
I find the B chair gives my better lumbar support but when I lean back, the edge of the seat kinda bit into my thigh and my back actually rest against the chair frame.
The C, on the other hand, is very 'roomy' but not as supportive as the B IMO and when I sit upright or in the tilt forward position, the edge of the seat will sometimes rest against the inside of my knee.
So which gives me a better fit?
Many thanks
wayne
Aerons.com: Sounds like the size B is fitting you better. One of the concerns when getting fitted for an Aeron chair is that the front edge of the seat does not come in contact with the back of your knee when in an upright position. A rule of thumb (or fingers as the case
maybe) is if you can fit 3 fingers between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knee the chair is the right size. A whole fist- try one size larger; fewer than 3 fingers- try a size smaller.
2007-10-01 - Has anyone found an aftermarket headrest that can be attached? I understand the manufacturer doesn't make one, but I have a bad disk and need to rest my neck muscles 2-3x/day. Thanks.
Jennifer
Aerons.com: Unfortunately we are unable to find any aftermarket headrests for the Aeron chair. The stance of Herman Miller on the headrest is that it does not offer any ergonomic benefit to the chair, so they simply will not design one.
2007-09-27 - Follow-up to posting from 2007-09-10:
My chair is equipped with a round clip underneith the cylinder, but the chair still wobbles several centimeters from side to side.
Karsten
Aerons.com: Karsten- call the service department at HomeOfficeSolutions.com, they can walk through this on the phone with you. They are great people with a huge knowledge of the chair and its functionality.
2007-09-26 - Hi - I recently purchased a used Aeron chair without the lumbar support. Can I add this on (i.e. buy the lumbar separately), or will I need to buy a new chair if I wanted to have the lumbar support?
Mike
Aerons.com: Lumbar supports (Lumbar pillow or PostureFit) can be added on at anytime. Call the parts and service department at HomeOfficeSolutions.com from what I hear they keep some around. All you will need to know is the size of the chair.
How do you find out the size of your chair? If you turn the chair around so you are facing the back you will see Herman Miller molded into the top of the back frame. Reach a finger between the top of the frame and the mesh, you will feel
dots; 1 dot for A, 2 dots for B, and 3 dots for C.
2007-09-25 - Hello, I really like my chair and have had it for about a year now. One thing I did notice is that all the belt loops on the back of my pants are all worn thin. I think it's because of the lumbar support and the type of material on the chair. Has anyone else had this problem? Also, does anyone know where to buy a cover for the chair? Any ideas would be great. Thanks
David
Aerons.com: OK, we had to do some research and called the fine people at Herman Miller for the answer:
Fabric wear or holes sometimes become apparent on wallet pockets of slacks especially if chair is not the proper size for the user. By working with an Authorized Herman Miller retailer youcan get fitted for the proper size chair and minimize chair abrasion. The pellicle material was re-formulated in 1999. However recent complaints have led Herman Miller to suggest that slip covers are the best solution for abrasion when chair size appears to be correct and user continues to experience abrasion issues.
We also called around and found out the the service department for HomeOfficeSolutions.com can order the slip covers for you. After talking with Herman Miller further it became apparent just how critical the proper chair size is. If fact they stated that less than 1% of chair users continue to experience abrasion issues once sized into the proper chair.
2007-09-25 - Hi, I really like my chair but I need to use it in a built in desk that is taller than normal. Is it possible to make the chair go higher than normal. When I raise the seat to the maximum it is still too short for the buit in desk.
Thanks, Pia
Pia
Aerons.com: Lucky for you Herman Miller has three different options available to meet your needs.
1. 3 inch carpet or hard floor casters. These will raise your chair by 1/2 an inch
2. European model Aeron chair. This looks like the US version, but is 2 inches taller for European standards 3. The Aeron Stool.
Call the folks at OfficeDesigns.com. Although they do not offer the Euro Aeron on their site, they have them for customers like you, and often in stock. They also offer the 3 inch casters and the Aeron Stool. I suggest having a work surface height measurement when calling.
2007-09-24 - I've seen many dimension listed on the Aeron brochure from the Herman Miller website, but not the arm height. I'm considering ordering a basic chair, but I'm concerned that the arm height will be too high to fit under the front of my desk. The height of the fixed arms would be variable depending on the height of the chair, but would it be possible for me to find out this range prior to ordering?
Chris
Aerons.com: The height ranges are as follows: On basic model:
Distant from floor to top of pad = 28 inches
Distant from floor to bottom of pad = 26 1/2 inches
Highly Adjustable model:
Distant from floor to top of pad at highest height = 31 inches
Distant from floor to top of seat at highest height = 23 inches
Range between arms to seat frame 2 1/2
2007-09-14 - I just bought an Aeron Chair. When taking it out of the back seat of my car a sticky little label came off. I couldn't open the label up as it was stuck to itself so I threw it away. Now I see on this website that it was probably the "Born-On Date" sticker. Is there any way to get a replacement for the sticker, or am I just out of luck?
Nancy
Aerons.com: Born-on stickers may not be replaced, but if you bought the chair from an Authorized Herman Miller dealer/retailer and have a receipt or bill of sale; Herman Miller will generally honor the warranty.
2007-09-11 - I have the model with adjustable armrests. The right armrest is loose, not the entire armrest, just the padded top. I have tightened the two screws beneath but the rest still slips from side-to-side. How can I tighten it?
Larry
Aerons.com: If you have tightened the two screws under the arm pad and there is still play in the adjustable arm itself, remember some play is normal. If it is loose and slipping in all positions, a piece may have broken inside the arm. Contact the service Department at HomeOfficeSolutions.com; they are one of our recommended authorized retailers. This is a repair that would be covered by the Herman Miller warranty, as long as your chair is covered. Not to get into great detail, but I do not advise taking the arm apart until you talk to them.
2007-09-10 - I have just bought a top-of-the-line fully equipped Aeron chair with alu base and everything - but it wobbles side to side(!) in the gas cylinder, making it very annoying to use. I have the same chair at work, and that one is very firm - no wobbling at all. If I turn the upside down, I have see that the pin that sticks out of the base of the cylinder wobbles way too much. Is this something that can be easily fixed, without having to ship the chair back and forward to the dealer?
Karsten
Aerons.com: All Aeron chairs have some play in the cylinders allowing them to move back and forth, and some move more than others due to manufacturing tolerances.
When you flip the chair over, check if there is a steel rectangluar clip or a round steel clip. There is no difference in the performance of either clip, but you want to make sure one or the other is under you chair.
You can send a picture of the bottom of the cylinder to one of our recommended Authorized Dealers, HomeOfficeSolutions.com Service Department and they can take a look for you.
2007-09-08 - I bought a fully loaded herman miller chair from a guy. However, the shaft/pole that connects the base to the chair is only a single shaft and not a telescopic shaft as I see in the pictures where one pole is inside the other. When I pickup the chair, the base (legs part) detaches from the chair itself. What is wrong? Where can I fix this? Thanks.
Alon
Aerons.com: It sounds like your cylinder either completely broke or the clip that holds the cylinder to the bottom of the chair is missing.
Call the Service Department at one of our recommended Authorized Dealers, HomeOfficeSolutions.com, these guys really know their stuff and can help you get it fixed, frequently for free!
2007-09-07 - Where can I buy an Aeron Chair in Allentown PA?
Linda Pelley
Aerons.com: Herman Miller has a dealer locator on their website:
http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Search?srch=store+locator&aId=10
There are also three Authorized Herman Miller retailers, whom we highly recommend, who can deliver any where in the US: OfficeDesigns.com, HomeOfficeSolutions.com and UltimateBackStore.com. You may access these sites directly from our home page.
2007-09-03 - What is the differece between an Aeron model AE113 and AE213? I've seen the buying guide the with model codes but there is no mention of the "2".
Thanks
Robert
Aerons.com: There are no differences in performance between an AE113 and an AE213.
In 2007, Herman Miller started selling the Aeron Chair in a knocked-down package to its dealers.
If the dealer wants the knocked-down package, they order the chair as an AE213; if they want the chair assembled by the factory, they order an AE113.
2007-08-29 - The bottom of the pneumatic rubs on the floor when I roll about. Is repair or adjustment needed? If so, how do I do this?
Lynn
Aerons.com: There are two different senarios in which dragging pneumatic cylinders may occur.
1. The chair is on thick carpet or a thick pad. In this case, you should use Deep Carpet Casters to elevate the chair.
2. The cylinder piston is actually sticking out beyond the bottom of the chair. You need a new cylinder.
Either way, call the folks at the Service Department at Home Office Solutions, one of our recommended authorized dealers. They will
assist you in fixing your chair or getting it fixed. Casters can easily be installed or the chair might need to go in for service.
If your chair warranty is valid, the latter should not cost you anything.
2007-08-17 - I have elbow problems that make it necessary to keep all pressure off my elbows. Normally I solve this by having no arms on my chairs. You don't seem to sell an armless chair. As far as I can tell, there is no where in central Maine to actually try one of these chairs. Do the arms adjust low enough that you can sit in the chair without touching them? I am 5'3".
Marion
Aerons.com: Yes, the Aeron Chair is available without arms, upon request. However, we have found that for most people, when the armrests are adjusted down to the lowest position, the armrests are low enough so a person will not touch them. There is a Herman Miller dealer whom you might contact in Portland. For your convenience, one of our recommended dealers, OfficeDesigns.com, has extended their return policy to 10 years for Aeron chairs. It is like having a free in-home trial period and it might be worth your time to check out.
2007-08-15 - We recently replaced a Aeron chair. It seems that that the old chair was higher (or capable of adjusting to a higher sitting position)than the new one. Is there a way to adjust the height of the new chair (besides the using the Pneumatic Lift?)
ali
Aerons.com: Depending on the model of Aeron Chair you replaced, there could be a height difference of 3/8 inches in maximum height adjustment. The Aeron with a standard height pneumatic (single stage) will raise up to 20-1/2 inches; the extended height pneumatic (dual stage) will raise up to 20-7/8 inches. Although the chair height cannot be adjusted to go higher; a common solution is to invest in the deep carpet casters. They typically run around $50 and will add 1/2 inch of height to the chair. If this is still not high enough, there is always the new Aeron Work Stools, with height adjustability up to 29 inches and 34 inches high.
2007-08-13 - I was pleased beyond words to find the item I purchased - replacement casters for my Herman Miller Aeron Chair - at such a great price at UltimateBackStore.com. I was unable to find the casters at most sites and, on those sites that did have them, you could only order in sets of 5 or 10.
That's fine for a commercial entity, but I'm a single person that happened to be lucky beyond my stars to get an Aeron in the first place... so I don't understand other sites penalizing me for having but one chair! UltimateBackStore.com will forever be on my 'good guys' list and I'll make sure to pass anyone ever seeking items from just such a store their way!
Gerald A.
2007-08-08 - I have to say I really appreciate Home Office Solutions and their outstanding customer service.

2007-08-06 - OfficeDesigns.com expedited my Aeron chair order so quickly! I was wowed that they sent it FedEx. It was perfect timing for my husband's birthday on Sunday.

2007-08-06 - Great chair from UltimateBackStore.com!!!
Susan
2007-08-04 - Just took delivery - great chair. But... it wobbles. This means that I can move about 1" in any direction when the chair is supposed to be "at rest". The seat is firmly attached to the cylinder, but the cylinder moves slightly inside the sleeve of the base. Is this normal - I find it disconcerting. Is it easy to fix??
Charlie
Aerons.com: The movement you are experiencing is completely normal. The Aeron Chair is designed for minimal movement, even when all of the adjustments are locked. The chair
2007-08-02 - The Tilt Tension Adjustment no longer works and the tilt feature is very loose. Is there a way to repair the tensioner?
Carl B.
Aerons.com: The Tilt Tension Adjustment and the Tilt mechanism as a whole can be repaired, in most situations. There are numerous reasons that your tensioner may not be working properly. We recommend that you contact the service and repairs department at HomeOfficeSolutions.com. If your chair is under warranty, any repair service will be free.
2007-07-31 - My employer is ordering Aeron chairs for all of us, but I'm unsure of what size to order. I fall into the gray area between A and B, and don't know which to choose (I'm 5'3" and 130#). What will the real difference be in the size?
Mary S.
Aerons.com: You would want to go with the size
2007-07-31 - I've had my Aeron for a couple of years now and it's never been very comfortable. It feels like either the seat angle is wrong or the pellicle is loose or not tensioned evenly. Is this a common problem? Is this something that's covered under warranty?
Tom from Minneap
Aerons.com: This is not a common problem, but on occasion we have heard of someone experiencing looseness in an Aeron seat, over a period of time. You may contact Customer Service at Home Office Solutions.com, Toll-free 888-677-1600. The seat is covered under the Herman Miller

2007-07-26 - I finally have had a chance to unpack my Aeron chair and it is absolutely fantastic. Candidly, I have never sat in a more comfortable office chair. Everything else I've tried now seems to pale in comparison, it is just that good. The comfort is phenomenal. Once I had my assistants sit in it, they were all smiles. Furthermore, the experience I had in purchasing the chair from Office Designs was equally terrific. When I return from vacation in a few weeks, I plan on buying a second Aeron chair, identical to the one I now have, but for my home office. Over time, we will certainly do more business with OfficeDesign.com
Pete from NJ
2007-07-26 - Once again I have to thank OfficeDesigns.com for their patience and knowledge to help me make my Aeron chair purchase.

2007-07-06 - My husband assembled my Aeron last evening and is now sitting in comfort. Not only is the chair comfortable, but aesthetically pleasing as well.
Vicki O
2007-06-27 - Is there any way of telling what size the Aeron is? Looks like I inherited one at the office and was initially excited but I just can’t get it adjusted so it’s comfortable, so I’m wondering if it’s the size or something else. Since the employer offered to order something to fit me (I’m 6’4” and ~290#), I’d like to figure out what size this one is to see if it’s just the wrong size or just won’t work for me.
Mark
Aerons.com: The easiest was to tell the size of an Aeron chair is to turn it around so the back is facing towards you. At the top of the back you will see a Herman Miller logo. Reach a finger between the mesh of the chair and the frame behind the logo; you will feel some raised dots. 1 dot for size A, 2 dots for size B, and 3 dots for size C.
As far as adjusting the chair: Officedesigns.com, one of our recommended Authorized Dealers has adjustment videos on their site to guide you through the process.
2007-06-21 - I was blown away by the accuracy and expediency of correspondence from OfficeDesigns.com. I’ll be ordering again from them real soon!!!

2007-05-17 - Hi,
I have the basic Aeron...great chair but even when fully raised to the top of it's adjustment I'm still sitting too low....is there any way to make it even higher...a retrofit kit or something of the like? I'm loathe to use a pillow on the breathable mesh.
Adam B
Aerons.com: There is a taller version of the Aeron chair that comes with a slightly higher cylinder and larger wheels. The height of the desk is also another issue. An adjustable keyboard tray might be another idea. Aerons.com suggest calling a recommended dealer for the solution.
2007-05-06 - Where in Seattle can I SEE AND FEEL these great chairs?

Aerons.com: You can check out Aerons at two Design Within Reach locations, one in Kirkland, one in Seattle. 2007-04-19 - I saw an eBay ad for HomeOfficeSolutions and called about the chair. Got the low down straight up over the phone. It shipped the day I ordered; it arrived in perfect condition when I was told it would be. What more could someone ask for? Perfect service. Very refreshing to find phone representatives that actually sound out the words they are attempting to say rather than mumbling through their script. Thank you for the sale, you've got a customer for life.

2007-04-13 - The two chairs we have purchased so far are currently being enjoyed by the General Manager and our Marketing Dir. They were extremely easy to assemble. I feel confident that the GM will want everyone in the office to experience the comfort and reliability of these chairs. Please expect more orders in the very near future!

2006-05-20 - My governement office bought your chairs. Although the seating area is comfortable, the arms on the chair are too high. This causes me to have neck pain at the end of the day. The arms are not adjustable on my model. I tried to take them off by removing the two Allen bolts. However, the whole back of the chairs comes off with it. Is there any way I can just remove the arms? Thanks
